Job Description
Encodia has an immediate opening for a Principal Scientist, Enzyme Engineering, who will help us to revolutionize protein sequencing using our reverse-translation technology. This position will drive new efforts to improve enzyme discovery programs. The successful applicant will have deep expertise evolving novel enzyme activities. A demonstrated ability to leverage computational approaches and collaborate across functional teams is essential. Requirements
Your Responsibilities
- Be part of a talented team of scientists who use cutting edge protein and enzyme engineering technologies to identify new enzyme variants with novel catalytic properties
- Generate enzyme libraries using directed evolution methods, to improve and scale up enzyme screening efforts
- Develop and implement rigorous, well-controlled workflows to characterize enzymes arising from screening
- Leverage knowledge of enzyme kinetics and develop methods for screening novel enzymes with desired properties
- Establish structure-function relationships and macromolecular design principles based on experimental data
- Work closely with molecular biology, computational biology, chemistry, and assay development teams to improve an iterative scientific workflow
- Analyze, interpret, document and present data to the scientific and leadership team
- Write internal scientific reports and articles for publication
- Work within a collaborative, and interdisciplinary team to actively contribute to executing the vision of the company
- Be accountable for personal goals aligned with team and company goals
- Train junior team members in new techniques
What You Bring to This Role
- Ph.D. in a biological discipline focused on enzyme engineering, protein biochemistry, directed evolution, and protein design
- 12+ years of industry experience and deep expertise with enzyme engineering, computational design, enzyme evolution and molecular biology technologies. Post-doctoral work may serve as experience
- Proficiency in enzymology/kinetics and in vitro biochemistry
- A creative thinker with a strong track record of evolving novel enzymes
- Well versed in designing, building, and screening variant libraries for new and modified catalytic activities
- Proactive communicator with demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communication
- Leads by example, using positive strategies to help establish a professional environment of trust, respect, and collaboration
- Critical thinking and independence, ability to troubleshoot, solve difficult problems, and develop process improvements
- Experienced, hands-on scientist with demonstrated excellence in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments
- A strong collaborator capable of driving success in a highly matrixed work environment
Highly Desirable
- Practical experience implementing automation approaches to improve assay throughput and reliability is beneficial
- Expanded data analysis skills, JMP experience is a plus

Compensation: $177,000 - $ 283,000/year. While compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role
