Job Description

Job Title: High School Program Coordinator (Enrichment Focused)

Our bold vision is that one day, all students in Durham, regardless of the color of their skin and the amount of money their parents have in their pockets, will be able to succeed. In order to make this vision a reality, Student Uā€™s mission is to empower students in the Durham Public Schools to own their education by developing the academic skills and personal well-being necessary to succeed in college and beyond. Student U aims to combat systemic racism and structural inequities by walking with students from the 6th grade through college graduation as they beat the statistics and become leaders in our community. The three components of Student U programming - an intergenerational college access-success pipeline, leadership development for students, families and staff, and an open source model of sharing our lessons learned is our contribution to creating a Durham where all children can succeed.

Our High School Program aims to ensure that 100% of students graduate on-time and are prepared to attend the college or post-secondary option of their choice by providing students with academic support, personal well-being, and exposure to in-school and out-of-school opportunities to reach their full potential. When students transition to high school, they are paired with an Advocate and based on their grade or academic need, they could also work closely with an Academic Coach or Navigation Specialist. This person will support their students with academic development, social/emotional well-being, career and college exploration, and overall personal growth. Depending on their grade, high school students participate in our Summer Academy or our Internship program in the summer. Students can also receive assistance in finding other summer enrichment opportunities that fit their academic needs and interests. All high school students participate in local college tours to inform their college decisions and are supported through the application process by our part-time College Advising Team (Navigation Specialists) and our full-time College Readiness and Success Coordinator to ensure they apply to and enroll in best-fit colleges. Student U believes that all students can succeed and works to ensure that 100% of our students will graduate from high school prepared to succeed in college.

This position works in close partnership with another High School Program Coordinator and currently reports to the Program Director. In partnership with other Student U staff, this team works collaboratively to plan, implement, and evaluate programming for approximately 200 high school students and families, conducts research for new high school initiatives by analyzing local and national best practices, and develops ambitious goals and innovative ideas to push the high school program forward. One of the goals specific to this position is to grow and develop the enrichment/professional development opportunities for all high school students and to help students discover their career interests and pathways. As a member of our full-time staff, the High School Program Coordinator participates in all staff meetings, professional developments, and special projects across departments.

The ideal candidate for this position demonstrates a passion for supporting high school students, working collaboratively on a team, and strongly believes in Student Uā€™s mission and core values.
