The Team
We are looking for an empathetic developer to join our Backend Platform Team, which is responsible for enabling the Engineering organization to concentrate on building features without having to worry about the glue. By defining standards and baking them into all aspects of the organization, we level up developers and provide a delightful environment upon which features are most efficiently built. This team supports our developers through libraries, tools, advice, and training.
Our systems are built as a collection of containerized microservices, deployed in the cloud, managed using infrastructure as code, and updated through a modern continuous deployment pipeline. You will be supporting Ruby on Rails, NodeJS (Typescript), Kotlin, and Python developers at Wealthsimple. We also are responsible for the tools and patterns used in our CI/CD Platform. We are working with existing teams to distill best practices, creating an excellent experience for new hires and teams, and enabling our developers to ship new features to over 2 million clients in their first month while keeping it simple.
We need developers who thrive in the fast feedback loop of improving every system around them, listening to the pain points of other developers, and eliminating unneeded complexity. Our platform team is very experienced, and you’ll be supported and have opportunities to grow while building more great tools that enable our engineering org to scale even further!
Within 1 month, you’ll:

• Complete our company-wide onboarding program, taking notes on what you could be improving later.
• Meet other new Wealthsimplers in your onboarding group learning the foundations of Wealthsimple, our past, present, and future.
• Gather an understanding of our technology by pair-programming with your teammates and attending developer onboarding sessions designed and presented by your peers.
• Have an assigned buddy within the Developer Tools organization that will assist you in getting up-to-speed with our architecture and current projects.
• Ship features or bug fixes to improve our development tooling.

Within 3 months, you’ll:

• Build familiarity with the Wealthsimple ecosystem, understanding the various languages and tools that we support.
• Be comfortable understanding the Software Development Lifecycle at Wealthsimple.
• Contribute and support work in a new or existing tool or framework and post your first #shipit !

Within 6 months, you’ll:

• Reliably ship new tools and frameworks to the wider Engineering team.
• Understand our existing systems and architecture. You’ll be able to provide input that shapes future architecture.
• Develop a big picture perspective. Understanding how our tools and frameworks come together. You’ll feel comfortable contributing to various codebases.

Within 12 months, you’ll:

• Plan, scope and implement a new tool or framework. Our roadmap for 2023 includes projects such as our infrastructure migration to kubernetes, building command line tooling that simplifies kubernetes concepts, improving how developers test at Wealthsimple, and iterating on our internal developer portal.
• Participate in our hiring process and shape the growth of the Engineering team.
