Job Description

Burke’s is in the midst of an exciting phase in its communications and fundraising initiatives. With consistent philanthropic growth over the last several years, Burke’s is looking for the right person to manage a robust and expanding annual giving programs. Burke's annual fund raises approximately $2+ million annually and has been growing at 10-15% per year for the last four years. Contributions stem primarily from alumnae, parents, grandparents and former parents, with high participation from trustees, current parents and faculty and staff. The right person will welcome a position where they can think analytically about the program, introduce new ideas, build strong relationships, and enjoy getting to know the warm and welcoming school community.

Katherine Delmar Burke School is an independent K-8 girls’ school located on a 3.5 acre campus in San Francisco. Based on a 115-year tradition of educational excellence, Burke’s today is one of California’s leading elementary schools for girls. The school combines strong academic and co-curricular programs with an emphasis on personal growth in a diverse and inclusive community. We emphasize the development of fundamental and higher level critical thinking skills in an atmosphere of creativity, exploration, and academic rigor.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Annual Giving and Alumnae Engagement Manager is responsible for Burke's Annual Fund, Alumnae Relations, and oversight of an Advancement Associate. This role will ensure a timely and successful Annual Fund and Alumnae Relations program, while focusing on growing the culture of philanthropy at the school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Annual Giving
    • Provides leadership for design, messaging, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of a highly segmented and personally messaged Annual Fund Program.
    • Effectively solicits all annual giving prospects through a variety of targeted mailings and follow-up plans. Develops and implements strategies to segment, follow-up, recognize, and steward annual gifts.
    • Actively monitors fundraising progress, developing new strategies to generate gifts from those non-responding or under-performing prospects.
    • Creates printed collateral (solicitation letter, brochure, response envelope, acknowledgement letter) to support appeals.
    • Enlists, trains, and supports annual giving volunteers.
    • Initiates regular communication with volunteers, preparing and distributing contributing reports to Board and Advancement Committee members.
    • With the Director of Advancement, plans and produces Annual Giving recognition events.
    • Creates strategies designed to bring constituencies closer to the school and to gain an understanding of annual support for the school.
    • Leads reunion giving, faculty/staff giving, alumnae, and other special annual giving programs.
    • Oversees the production of the fund donor list for the Annual Report.

    Alumnae Engagement
    • Plan, implement and promote programs that strategically engage alumnae in an effort to grow alumnae engagement in philanthropy and the life of the school
    • Staff the Alumnae Association Board
    • Manage and grow volunteer Class Representative pool
    • Strategize, research, implement and propose methods of growing alumnae giving
    • Strategize, recommend and schedule personal meetings between alumnae, Head of School, Director of Advancement and other key individuals
    • In conjunction with Director of Communications, oversee alumnae communication efforts
    • In conjunction with Special Events Manager, plan and coordinate logistics for alumnae special events including annual luncheon. Reach out to reunion classes to encourage attendance and support class representatives as they coordinate activities around the luncheon
    • Oversee nomination process, speaking programs and logistics for the Distinguished Alumna Award

    General
    • Actively participates as a member of the Advancement team to ensure the achievement of Burke’s goals. Establishes cooperative working relationships with other staff members to increase understanding and support of all fundraising efforts.
    • Provide support at community events and fundraisers with three required weekend events per school year
    • Assists with the management of the constituent database, Raiser’s Edge.
    • Ensures confidentiality of departmental information.

    Requirements

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Working knowledge of Blackbaud’s The Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising database
    • Three or more years’ experience in fundraising and proven record of fundraising success
    • Must possess knowledge of fundraising principles and practice and maintain a professional, polished demeanor
