Job Description

The Director of Nursing organizes and administers the areas of Patient Care Services to attain the facility objectives established by the governing authority.

  • Participates as a member of the Leadership Team. Attends and participates in management meetings providing input on staffing, resource allocations, staff development, organization programs, goals, and objectives.
  • Develops sound nursing policies and procedures.
  • Develops an effective working relationship and works directly with the Medical Staff to meet the facility's goals and objectives.
  • Seeks input from HR Director in addressing employee performance or conduct concerns. Practices early intervention and documentation in employee performance and conduct problems.
  • Develops an understanding of the hospital's financial operations and his/her department's role in meeting financial performance goals; fiscal steward.
  • Staffs the units according to acuity, assuring the units are staffed appropriately.
  • Directs staffing/purchasing coordinators, unit managers, house supervisors, and clinical educator in all aspects of their roles.
  • Conducts audits; collects data, tracks/trends, and proactively works to improve outcomes
  • Ensures all patients are treated with respect and dignity by the following means: responds promptly to patient concerns and complaints, offering options for resolution; complies with all patient rights standards and regulations; keeps administrator and core management team abreast on patient rights; educates clinical staff on patient rights and oversee communication with patients during the admission process. Promptly follows up with patient, family, or referral source information, requests, complaints, or concerns.
  • Completes administrative/staff work promptly; responsive to all stakeholders, including senior leadership, other departments, and peers.
  • Recommends effective alternatives or modifications to treatment plans based on patients' progress and response to treatment.
  • Acts with integrity: Builds relationships on trust and respect. Holds self and others accountable; admits mistakes and learns from them.
  • Customer/Patient Focus: Makes customers/patients and their needs a primary focus. Dedicated to meeting the expectations of internal and external customers/patients. Represents the organization positively and professionally. Solicits feedback and uses it for service improvement.

  • Stewardship: Works efficiently, cost-effectively utilizes all resources, adheres to organization’s policies and procedures, actively seeks ways to reduce cost and conserve resources to improve results. Demonstrates social responsibility.
  • Orientation: Assists with new employee orientation. Creates a receptive environment for new employees, making them welcome and assisting both informally and formally with new employee orientation.
  • Safety: Demonstrates safe work habits and knowledge of all related requirements and practices relative to job assignment. Completes incident reports according to policy for work-related illness or injury. Follows all established infection control practices. Assists in maintaining a safe environment and knows emergency plans, and participates in all emergency preparedness activities.

Requirements

Minimum of four (4) years experience in an acute psychiatric setting and two (2) years experience in nursing management with demonstrated ability to provide management leadership and direction for the clinical staff.
