Job Description

Has 24-hour accountability for the quality and efficiency of the department’s nursing care. Responsible for maintaining staffing within the productivity standard and when variances occur, investigates contributing factors. Is responsible for the performance

improvement planning and monitoring for the department. Has a good working knowledge of various psychiatric diagnoses and is a resource for nurses and mental health technicians. Provides staff education, coaching, counseling, and evaluations within the department. The nurse manager works in collaboration with all departments throughout the hospital.


Duties include but are not limited to:

Consistently supports the hospital’s Spirit of Serving Standards, in line with the Mission, Vision and Values of Dallas Behavioral Healthcare Hospital.

Follows the guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).

Promotes a culture of safety for patients and Associates through proper identification,

proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.

Maintains staffing within productivity standards and investigates variances and reports

findings in a timely fashion. Adjusts staffing for acuity and unusual situations.

Monitors and trends Performance Improvement activities and makes suggestions for improvements as needed. Appropriately involves the nursing staff in this process.

Strives to improve Employee Satisfaction.

Responsible for ensuring that the Patient Advocacy process is adhered to.

Has an excellent working knowledge of patient rights and other regulatory standards.

Ensures nursing staff is educated about policy changes and performance expectations.

Participates on committees outside the department and represents the department in a professional manner.

Interviews, hires, and supervises designated staff members. Maintain, track and trend the productivity of employees.

Prepares payroll and completes monthly work schedules in accordance with budget and to ensure adequate staffing levels and minimal overtime. Reports labor variances as required.

Performs employee evaluations in a timely manner; utilizing standard trended individual and department performance measures. Ensure competencies are met and competency checklists are appropriately maintained.

Working knowledge of the capital and budgetary process.

Supports, reviews, and understands CMS/TJC/TXDHS compliance activities and expectations. departmental compliance with regulatory standards.

Actively engaged in cost control with regard to quality outcomes without compromise to patient safety or quality of care.

Supportive of the compliance program set forth by the hospital and demonstrated by:

- Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.

- Adheres to dealing appropriately and fairly with employee misconduct.

- Enforces all compliance policies as they pertain to his/her area.

- Provides and assures timely compliance education as requested by the Compliance Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.

Investigates customer service issues and incidents; facilitates positive outcomes and education.

As a Nurse Leader, sets an example to all staff in their daily activities and performs duties as assigned and requested.




Requirements

  • Education: BSN from an accredited college or university preferred. CPR, Behavior Managing Program (obtained within 30 days upon hire)
  • Required Licenses: Valid Texas RN license in good standing required. BSN preferred
  • Experience: At least five years experience working in the psychiatric field plus two years management experience.
  • Must be 21 years old or older.
  • Additional: Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus
  • Knowledge, Skills amp; Abilities:
    • Knowledgeable of patient rights and laws pertaining to mental health and regulations pertaining to psychiatric nursing and the treatment of the mentally and emotionally disturbed patients. Theories, principles, and techniques of group and individual psychotherapy. Symptoms and behavior patterns of emotionally disturbed mentally ill patients.
    • Advanced knowledge and clinical skills in diagnosis and treatment of mental health. Professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques used in the care and treatment of psychiatric patients. Social, psychological, and physical factors of mental and emotional disorders. Medical and psychological terminology. Medications, including psychotropic drugs, and effects on psychiatric patients. Control, preparation and administration of medications.
