About the role

We are looking for an experienced mid-level General Counsel with strong contract law experience to oversee DISCO’s legal affairs.

This is a remote, flexible part-time position (16 - 24 hours per week to be agreed upon with the successful candidate), open to candidates located on the West Coast USA.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing all contract negotiations, including customer, vendor and partner contracts.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders in the business on DISCO to ensure our terms and privacy policy and customer contracts continue to fit the company’s needs and relevant legal requirements, and updating these where required.
  • Ensuring DISCO’s legal compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory frameworks, including privacy and data protection laws.
  • Overseeing risk and compliance activities related to tooling we use.
  • Liaising with our People department to ensure we meet legal requirements related to employment law in the regions we have staff and contractors.
  • Providing strategic advice on our AI activities and related legal matters.
  • Liaising with external counsel on more specialized legal matters.


Role Requirements

We are looking for an experienced mid-level General Counsel with strong contract law experience to oversee DISCO’s legal affairs.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years legal experience, including at least 3 years working with contracts
  • 3+ years in a legal role at a software company, ideally a startup
  • Demonstrated experience building trusted partnerships internally and externally
  • Exceptional project management and delivery skills
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and a strong sense of ownership

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple projects with deadlines
  • Has been a legal department of one at a startup
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills, and a natural ability to break big tasks into smaller sub-tasks that can be monitored and tracked
  • Strong technical skills
  • Experience with AI products and related legal considerations, including considerations around training data
  • Experience balancing business imperatives with customer requirements
  • Strong understanding of compliance requirements
  • Experience working at a fast-paced company
  • A strong understanding of the music and media landscape worldwide
  • The ability to prioritise your workload in line with tight deadlines and work effectively under pressure
  • Excellent team player who works closely with others to deliver results
