Job Description

The Nurse Supervisor will facilitate delivery of high-quality, safe and effective nursing care; to assist in the operation of the nursing department according to the legal guidelines of mental health care in the State of Texas: to supervise staff activities according to the hospital's goals and philosophy; to support nursing staff in interpretation and implementation of policies, procedures and nursing standards of care.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assessment: Through a systematic process of interaction with patient, the patient's significant others, and the appropriate health care providers, collects and analyzes data regarding the patient's physical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural and anticipated discharge needs; determines patient's alcohol or drug toxicity; identifies signs of withdrawal; conducts screenings or assessments to determine needs of treatment.
  • Planning: Each patient's unique needs are identified and incorporated into a comprehensive and individualized care plan. The severity of the disease, condition, impairment or disability is included as an important element of the planning process.
  • Implementation/Care of the patient: The care and treatment of the patient are rendered in a competent manner and are based on current chemical dependency and psychiatric nursing knowledge and standards; care is evaluated against the goals and plan of care and is revised periodically, as appropriate to the patient.
  • Continuum of Care: Facilitates the patient's access to the appropriate level of care and setting.
  • Supervision of patient care services: Identifies and oversees the operation of the nursing program and services necessary to meet key mental health needs of the community in keeping with the hospital's philosophy and goals; monitors, evaluates, and assists in modifying clinical services, utilizing the input and skills of the nursing staff.
  • Maintenance of safe and therapeutic milieu: Assumes responsibility in maintaining a safe, orderly, and therapeutic physical environment for all patients.
  • Working Relationships: Establishes and maintain effective working relationships with physicians and health professional affiliates, patient's facilities, and nursing staff.
  • Participates in activities which enhance professional growth and development. Provide direct care to patients, which includes facilitating social and emotional needs, supervising medication schedules and evaluating patient progress.
  • Plans and provides nursing care for patients.

Requirements

  • Education: Possesses current RN license to practice in the State of Texas; two years of management experience preferred; Psychiatric experience preferred. Experience in inpatient mental health settings at a management level; advanced knowledge and skills; skill in maintaining information as highly confidential; skilled in flexibility, organizational, prioritization, and time management skills; stress management skills, crisis management skills; skills in analysis and evaluation; sound clinical judgment and decision-making; skills in clinical supervision and basic skills in personnel management concepts and methods; basic teaching or training skills preferred; able to understand apply applicable standard and regulations (e.g. JCAHO,HCFA,Title 22).
  • Must be 21 years old or older.

  • Knowledge, Skills amp; Abilities:
    • Knowledgeable of patient rights and laws pertaining to mental health and regulations pertaining to psychiatric nursing and the treatment of the mentally and emotionally disturbed patients. Theories, principles, and techniques of group and individual psychotherapy. Symptoms and behavior patterns of emotionally disturbed mentally ill patients.
    • Advanced knowledge and clinical skills in diagnosis and treatment of mental health. Professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques used in the care and treatment of psychiatric patients. Social, psychological, and physical factors of mental and emotional disorders. Medical and psychological terminology. Medications, including psychotropic drugs, and effects on psychiatric patients. Control, preparation and administration of medications.
    • Demonstrates sound leadership skills and utilizes these skills in organizing the activities and schedules for medical and/or non-medical tasks of the Child, Adolescent and Adult for a given shift; record of consistently high quality of clinical and interpersonal skills to be an exemplary role model to others
    • Displays basic knowledge of treatment procedures; interventions common to acute psychotic as well as non-violent crises intervention practice, medical and psychiatric emergency procedures.
