The Role:
Wide Open Media is seeking a Freelance College Basketball Writer to help increase production as we expand coverage on our FanBuzz NCAAB vertical. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for both men’s and women’s college basketball, with strong preference for someone who has prior experience covering the sport. We’ll also consider general sports writers with an organic interest in college basketball who are eager to help grow FanBuzz’s social and organic presence with engaging news articles, long-form evergreen content, interviews, profiles, and more.
The Freelance Writer will be expected to assist with the site’s college basketball coverage, ensuring that their work aligns with our standards and editorial direction, aiming to transform NCAAB news into personable content that has multi-channel appeal. The ideal candidate should also feel comfortable working independently, and must be technically proficient, detail-focused, and mindful of tight deadlines. They will have experience engaging new audiences, embracing cultural trends, and championing inclusivity in college basketball.
Requirements:
- Comprehensive knowledge of college basketball, including its athletes, teams, and rules
- 3+ years of fast-paced web writing experience for news publishers
- 2+ years of hands-on SEO writing experience
- Knowledge of/experience with WordPress
- Strong understanding of quality and engaging content with excellent writing skills across a range of verticals
- Ability to consistently source, conceptualize, and pitch new article ideas
- Ability to craft articles in a timely manner and work quickly on breaking news
- Previous experience owning a basketball vertical is a plus
Responsibilities:
- Identify, track, and report on trending college basketball stories and developments in real time
- Pitch and write men’s and women’s college basketball content from start to finish, including crafting engaging headlines, optimizing according to SEO best practices, and selecting appropriate photography
- Edit, revise, and proofread content to meet FanBuzz.com's standards
- Work with the FanBuzz Editorial Director and WOM Head of Content to identify relevant SEO keywords and integrate them into our basketball content strategy
- Conduct and/or oversee interviews with college basketball athletes, team members, coaches, and industry figures
- Collaborate with the larger editorial team to ensure that our basketball coverage aligns with and supports FanBuzz.com's overall editorial strategy
- Provide weekly updates on basketball content

Note: This is a remote freelance position, and we welcome candidates from all locations within the contiguous United States. Rates for this freelance lifestyle writing position range from $25 to $300 per piece, based on the complexity, length, and experience of the writer.
