Job Description

The Technician will work as part of a team to establish and maintain perennial agroecological systems. This is an outdoor, field work position. This will involve driving company trucks, towing trailers, operating tractors with a wide range of implements, operating a range of other specialty equipment and tools, collecting data, troubleshooting equipment, and performing manual field work. The technician works under the direction of and reports to the Hub Manager. The technician will be expected to assume leadership responsibilities dependent on experience and areas of interest, overseeing other field crew members and Field Crew Assistants on a rotating basis.

We currently have positions open at both our Champaign, IL hub and our Spring Green, WI hub.

Start date: Tentatively February 19, 2024

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities will vary substantially by season, but will primarily include:

  • Establish trees, prairies, and cover crops
  • Pesticide applications
  • Maintain plant fertility
  • Weed control
  • Field monitoring
  • Harvest fruit amp; nuts
  • Field work with tractor and heavy machinery
  • Maintain amp; repair equipment
  • Manage inventory
  • Receive amp; manage tree shipments
  • Collect biometrics data from trees
  • Survey amp; layout new plantings
  • Clean amp; organize shop/offices
  • Maintain comprehensive field logs
  • Prune plants
  • Harvest, maintain, and store bare root tree stock

Requirements

Core Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to work outside, long hours, in challenging conditions
  • Commitment to participating in an open and collaborative environment
  • Willingness to work independently with strong self-direction
  • Strong communication skills
  • High school degree, or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license


Ideal candidates will have:
  • Familiarity with perennial agriculture or habitat restoration
  • Experience in farming, landscaping, forestry, or other field-based jobs
  • Mechanical or carpentry skills
  • Preference for candidates willing to grow with the company

Benefits

Compensation: $19-$24/hour, commensurate with education and experience. Subject to annual review for possible increase

  • PTO: All employees accrue paid time off from the beginning of their employment. Paid time off may be used for any purpose, including vacation, sickness, personal time, and holidays. No paid holidays are automatically provided (e.g. New Years Day, Thanksgiving, etc.) - employees must use their paid time off pool for these holidays if desired. Full-time, field-based employees have a fixed PTO winter break period of 160 hours (20 days) each year for the last two weeks of December and first two weeks of January. Limited PTO requests will be allowed March 1- June 1.

Stock Options: Employees that stay with the company for at least three years will be eligible for profit-sharing.
