Making A Difference Foundation’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of others, one person at a time, by helping them acquire the most basic human needs: food, housing, encouragement, and opportunity. In keeping with that mission, we have partnered with the Washington State Department of Commerce through a grant to provide low-income families with information and tax preparation services for Washington’s Tax Credit Outreach Program.
The program is designed to help low-income families identify if they qualify for the Working Families Tax Credit from the Washington State Department of Revenue and, if so, also file for it. We provide outreach to the community during community events, as well as by hosting workshops, performing various marketing efforts, and providing information at our Eloise’s Cooking Pot Food Bank to get the word out to people who qualify but might not be aware of the tax credit. Besides information, we connect families to free tax preparation services so they can quickly and accurately file for this $1,200 payment.
This program has a strong focus on serving BIPOC clients, immigrants, and those who have limited English, who are historically disenfranchised and experience lower incomes and greater barriers to resources and support. Many low-income clients who don’t normally file taxes due to their economic status miss out on filing for this tax credit because they are not aware of them or don’t realize they qualify. They miss out on the economic boost they are entitled to. The refundable cash-back credit can be used in many ways to help their household stabilize and move ahead, including helping pay for the increased costs of food and other basic goods, housing costs, utilities, childcare, and medical expenses.
