Job Description

As a Wine Sommelier for Happier, you'll be responsible for curating and managing the wine offerings. You'll need to have a deep understanding of different types of wines, regions, vintages, and food pairings. Your role involves guiding customers in selecting wines that complement their meals or preferences, ensuring an exceptional dining experience. Additionally, you'll be responsible for maintaining the wine inventory, training staff on wine service and knowledge, and potentially organizing wine tastings or events.

Operated and developed by Happier People Management, The Water Street Associates (WSA) Building is a modern workspace for the Fashion, Arts, Culture, and Technology industries. 700,000 sq. ft. of programming area, spread across 31 floors, will offer Health amp; Wellness, Dining, Retail, and the Arts intermixed with coworking spaces, offices, and a Members' community for a holistic experience. TheWSABuilding project will break down barriers between the public and the once-siloed office tower, expanding the cultural offerings of the neighborhood.

Responsibilities:

  • Curate and manage the wine list, ensuring it complements the cuisine and appeals to the target clientele.
  • Assist guests in selecting wines by recommending appropriate pairings based on their preferences, budget, and food choices.
  • Maintain accurate records of wine inventory, including ordering, receiving, and stocking wines to ensure availability.
  • Provide training to restaurant staff on wine service techniques, wine knowledge, and proper storage procedures.
  • Continuously educate yourself and staff on wine trends, varietals, regions, and production techniques.
  • Oversee the presentation and serving of wines, ensuring proper decanting, serving temperatures, and glassware.
  • Engage with guests to enhance their wine experience, answer questions, and provide insights into wine characteristics.
  • Plan and execute wine events such as tastings, wine dinners, or educational seminars to promote wine sales and enhance customer engagement.
  • Build and maintain relationships with wine distributors and suppliers to ensure access to a diverse selection of wines.
  • Ensure proper storage conditions in the wine cellar or storage area to preserve the quality of wines.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of wine varietals, regions, vintages, and production methods.
  • Certification from recognized wine education programs such as Court of Master Sommeliers, Wine amp; Spirit Education Trust (WSET), or equivalent is preferred.
  • Previous experience working as a sommelier or in a wine-related role, preferably in a fine dining establishment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with guests and staff effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail to accurately maintain wine inventory and ensure proper service standards.
  • Passion for delivering exceptional customer service and enhancing the dining experience through wine selection.
  • Ability to lift and carry wine cases and work on your feet for extended periods during service hours.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required in the hospitality industry.
  • Knowledge of liquor laws and regulations regarding the sale and service of alcohol in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with kitchen staff, servers, and management to deliver a seamless dining experience.
