Job Description

ButterflyMX is a rapidly growing proptech startup that makes property access simple for owners, staff, residents, and visitors. Our solutions are relied upon by more than 10,000 multifamily, commercial, student housing, and gated communities worldwide, including those developed, owned, and managed by the most trusted names in real estate.

Fantastic people are the key to our success. As a distributed, primarily remote workforce, we’re looking for more intelligent, passionate, collaborative, and down-to-earth individuals to join our growing team. Our culture is transparent and flexible; our benefits range from a 401(k) match to quarterly stipends for self-care. While we work incredibly hard to improve the experience of everyone who lives, works, and visits our communities, we always have time for a good laugh.

ButterflyMX is hiring for a Director of Product Design. In this super impactful role, you will be responsible for leading and managing our product design team and working closely with cross-functional teams including product management and engineering to deliver an exceptional user experience. You will play a key role in driving the overall design strategy, ensuring consistency and quality across all product design initiatives.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead and mentor the product design team to build B2B and B2C product experiences designed to bring delight to buildings and their communities. Our integrated product platform spans B2C iOS and Android apps, a B2B OS, and UI/UX across our hardware product suite
  • Develop a deep understanding of our industry and the pain points of building management, property managers, residents, and visitors
  • Collaborate with product managers and engineers to develop a vision for how to become essential to residents and staff, ensuring design implementation meets design standards
  • Partner with product managers to align on roadmap priorities across the business and ensure the appropriate projects are getting the proper design focus at the right stage
  • Act as a player and coach, contributing actively on individual projects while also guiding and mentoring a team of product designers to research, conceive, design, prototype, validate, execute, and iterate on their projects
  • Balance technical, business, and customer requirements while applying a user-centric design approach to projects
  • Break down large challenges into smaller decisions framed as trade-offs (e.g., time vs. scope), making decisions with urgency
  • Create user flows, sketches, use cases, personas, and other product design and communication artifacts as needed, based on business requirements and constraints
  • Manage stakeholders up, down, and sideways, seeking, receiving, responding, and incorporating feedback as needed

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of Product Design (UI/UX) leadership experience, including managing and developing designers and designing for SaaS software
  • Prior experience designing products in a fast-growing startup environment is required
  • Full-stack design experience including web, iOS, Android, etc.
  • Experience designing products for both consumers and businesses is an advantage
  • Team player who enjoys collaborating with product, engineering, and other stakeholders throughout the product development process
  • Track record of delivering experiences that go beyond a single product, understanding how an ecosystem comes to life through design
  • Ability to know when to zoom in or out appropriately, whether it’s diving into your designs, providing feedback to the team, prioritizing work, or navigating through ambiguity to get things done in a meaningful way
  • Clear, concise, and persuasive communication, whether the audience is executive leadership, your direct reports, or your stakeholders
  • Ability to strike the right balance between exploration and execution
  • Desire to roll up your sleeves and act as a player-coach, doing the work that needs to be done while also managing others to a successful outcome
  • Experience in native mobile product design and a multi-product perspective is essential
  • Proven track record of breaking down large complex challenges into iterative smaller decisions framed as trade-offs (e.g., time vs. scope) and make decisions with urgency
  • Highly proficient in user-centered design principles, testing methodologies, and tools
  • Experience working in a globally distributed team across multiple time zones

Benefits

  • Comprehensive Medical (ButterflyMX covers 90% of the cost) starting day 1
  • Dental and Vision plans (ButterflyMX covers 100% of the cost) starting day 1
  • 401(k) plan with a match
  • 13 paid holidays and 25 days of PTO
