Job Description

ABOUT THE TEMP COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER POSITION

CURYJ has grown significantly over the last several years to meet the community’s needs. CURYJ has made significant contributions towards ending youth incarceration in California and beyond, including major local and State policy wins, such as ending local gang injunctions, ending DA-discretionary youth transfers to the adult system, and shifting resources from Police and Probation into the hands of the Community.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Manager oversees the day-to-day execution of the communications departments recurring goals, and works closely with the Director of Communications to scope out, assign and complete various discrete projects supporting various departments at CURYJ, organizational partners on statewide advocacy campaigns, and obtaining earned media spots.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee the CURYJ communications channels (website, social media, monthly newsletters and annual reports)

Document CURYJ history amp; ongoing accomplishments

Create messaging to articulate the ecosystem of our current work

Create content for program brochures and coordinate printing and distribution

Work with Director of Communications to develop and implement annual communications plan

Manage IT related projects via consultants

Develop or innovate internal and external communications

Train staff on technical skills related to the communications plan and train staff on their role in CURYJ social media accounts

Manage communications associate level staff workflow and assignments

Keep records of key communications metrics, manage our asset and photo archive

Requirements

3-5+ years experience in Communications that include a blend of advocacy and media relations

Excellent writing skills

A minimum of 2 years managing projects

A minimum of 1 years experience managing people

A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes

in a competitive communications environment

Ability to coach and support staff and youth as spokespersons

Commitment to social and youth justice

Ability to balance irregular schedules with evening, weekend, and holiday work, with periods of rest and reflection

Experience in digital organizing, social media, blogs, text. SMS, and web based outreach

Experience with design programs and basic layout skills

Be a self-starter and team player

Have a strong political understanding of racial, juvenile and criminal injustice

Understanding of Oakland and the broader Alameda County

Understanding of California policies that have criminalized communities of color

Experience working with low-income communities of color and formerly incarcerated people

Benefits

COMPENSATION amp; BENEFITS Compensation is commensurate with experience, ranging from $75,000 - $85,000. This position is exempt full time with excellent benefits, including 100% coverage of employee’s medical (highest Cal Choice package included), $25,000 life insurance plan, vision and dental; and an option to enroll into a 403(b) plan.

In addition to 2 weeks paid vacation per year + a 2 week office shutdown during the December/January holidays, CURYJ provides the following paid holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, July 4th (Independence Day), Labor Day, California Native American Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, The Friday after Thanksgiving Day, Your Birthday.
