What we are looking for

AvantStay is looking for an experienced Corporate Counsel to join our dynamic, hardworking, and people-oriented Legal Team. This person will be a skilled and versatile law practitioner with experience in a variety of areas all aimed at across-the-board compliance. This hire will be part of a small in-house legal team that is directly involved in the company’s strategic decisions and operations, and will have the opportunity to interface with executive and business teams to manage and execute the organization’s operational needs and strategic priorities. This hire will thrive in unstructured environments and be ready to create processes and procedures wherever they see fit.

What you’ll do

    • Litigation - Managing active and threatened litigation with local counsel, when appropriate, and addressing relevant insurance claims
    • Transactions - Negotiate and draft key deal documents for transactions across the company.
    • Privacy - Develop and maintain subject matter expertise in areas of data use and protection laws (including state/federal consumer protection and privacy laws, CCPA, GDPR and other global privacy laws)
    • Employment - Work with and lead cross-functional groups to identify and implement employment law compliance best practices
    • Intellectual Property - Advise on and help maintain intellectual property portfolio
    • Equity - Manage the company’s employee stock option plan in conjunction with our People team
    • Leadership - Develop and maintain strong business relationships as a key relationship manager for the Legal team among the various internal business groups requiring legal support
    • Advice amp; Counsel - Provide counsel on strategic deals, provide day-to-day advice, and consult on issues that arise in existing relationships
    • Project Management - Lead larger impact projects both within the department and across the company while working with cross-functional teams, including delivering ongoing improvements to simplify and optimize contract standards, processes, and templates to better serve clients

Requirements

What you’ll bring...

    • Active law license in at least one of our operating states (ideally CA)
    • 3+ years of experience as counsel at a litigation firm (ideally related to premises liability defense)
    • 2+ years of in-house legal experience for a company (ideally for a highly regulated start-up)
    • Skilled at resolving complex issues and thinking creatively
    • Excellent judgment and exceptional integrity
    • Active listener and excellent written and oral communicator
    • Strong project management skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to be self-directed and work in team settings across disciplinesActive law license in at least one of our operating states (ideally CA)
