Job Description

SUMMARY: Writes and edits news stories, commentary, and other editorial content for publication. Works with commentary staff on accepting and rejecting incoming outside articles, and helps to assign and develop analysis articles. Writes and edits weekly magazine content, including From the Editor features. Helps supervise and perform final magazine production and quality control. Tasks may vary depending on team needs as determined by the publication Editor-in-Chief. Serves as the primary backup for the editor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned to meet editorial department objectives.

1. Edits legal summaries, abstracts, highlights, articles, and special reports for print and electronic publication.

2. Reads and reviews potential articles for publication from both in-house and outside authors.

3. Interprets, analyzes, and writes articles or summaries of source material, including cases, rulings, procedures, regulations, court decisions, congressional activity, etc.

4. Keeps abreast of current events through pertinent literature, media, and contacts with government officials, tax professionals, industry groups, and others.

5. Enters information in the Content Management System.

6. May participate in company-sponsored conferences, roundtable discussions, etc.

7. Assists the editor with coordinating with other editorial departments to assure quality of published articles.

8. Helps produce, edit, and coordinate special magazine features, including anniversary, year-in-review, and other longer-term pieces.

9. Writes headlines, subheads, magazine content, and photo captions as needed or required.

10. Responds to internal and external queries related to content.

11. Edits for substance, style, and accurateness, conducts research as needed, and ensures proper citation style.

12. In the absence of the editor, supervises magazine staff and ensures a continuing high quality of editing and writing.

13. Adheres to established publication deadlines, and company style guide.

KNOWLEDGE amp; SKILLS:
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of writing and editing concepts and principles
  • Must be able to evaluate content for grammar, clarity, and coherence
  • Technical expertise in tax-related subject matter, generally acquired through education, but may also be acquired on the job
  • Ability to apply knowledge of tax law and writing concepts in a flexible, appropriate manner to diverse media and formats
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure in a team environment
  • Good computer skills, including a working knowledge of MS Windows and MS Word
  • Familiarity with online publishing and web-content management.
  • Highly motivated and well-organized

Requirements

  • J.D. (strongly preferred) or college degree in English, journalism, or related field required
  • At least two years of experience in writing, editing or copy editing print and electronic products, including experience in substantive editing of print documents for online presentation
  • Previous experience in tax publishing or practice preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard style manuals
