Job Description

Applications received by Friday, March 22th at 11:59PM will receive full consideration

About EQAT: Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT) is a Philadelphia-based activist group that uses nonviolent direct action to push corporations toward the intersection of environmental, economic, and racial justice. EQAT is primarily volunteer-led and currently has five paid staff members. Read more about our values and practices and about our current campaign targeting Vanguard, the world’s second largest investor in fossil fuels.

About the position:

This is a fixed-term, 8-month position to support EQAT through a period of growth. Continued employment beyond 8 months would be contingent upon EQAT’s future campaign needs and financial resources.

EQAT is looking to hire an additional campaign organizer for the remainder of 2024 as we scale our campaign. As a campaign organizer, you will empower volunteers to plan and execute nonviolent direct action tactics, whether that be street theater or civil disobedience, in order to move a multi-trillion dollar company. You will look for opportunities for volunteers to take on the bulk of campaign work. Your role will include: executing a recruitment and onboarding plan for new volunteers; supporting action planning; developing trainings; and mentoring budding leaders to grow their skills.

You will be joining at an exciting time in the campaign. Our target is well aware of our presence, media outlets have begun to spotlight our campaign, and many people new to activism are showing up eager to jump in. If you have a knack for supporting people to take steps outside their comfort zone and an interest in refining your own skill set, we’d love to get your application!

Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, support, and guide small teams of volunteers (what we call core teams) to design and execute strategic direct action tactics and organizational events like phone banks and social gatherings.
  • Recruit new volunteers to join EQAT and take their first actions with us.
  • Play a lead role organizing a Never Vanguard campaign action connected to a major Quaker conference on July 3rd, as well as support distributed actions in the following months.
  • Welcome new volunteers by providing a friendly presence, information about how we work, and ways to get involved.
  • Invite volunteers to step outside their comfort zones and take on new roles in direct action, providing training and debriefing to support learning and growth.
  • Coach and provide one-on-one mentorship of volunteers stepping into leadership roles.
  • Provide leadership during actions to support the group to be safe and strategic

Requirements

Candidates for this role will exhibit the following competencies and traits:

  • Organizing experience whether paid or as a volunteer -- bringing people together to build skills and achieve a common goal. This could be in your workplace, community organization, place of worship, or through electoral or issue-based work.
  • Interest in working on climate justice with spiritual grounding.
  • Ability to understand and navigate power dynamics present in climate justice work, especially along the lines of race, class, age, and gender in order to build power and win campaigns.
  • Project management skills, including breaking a goal down into chunks, delegating tasks to teams, and following through in a timely manner to finalize details.
  • Compelling communication, showing an ability to get others excited, uplifted, focused, and willing to step outside their comfort zones.
  • Humble leadership, displayed by being willing to voice an opinion, suggesting courses of action forward and gaining buy-in on them, listening to the group wisdom, and being willing to take feedback and admit mistakes.
  • Experience facilitating, training, teaching, or otherwise supporting groups (in the context of nonviolent direct action or campaigning is a plus).
  • Excitement to work with our people (an intergenerational, faith-based group working at the intersection of climate and economic justice; a high concentration of Quakers in the Philly region) and in alignment with EQAT’s cultural principles, including openness to learning, growth, and regular reflection both individually and as a group.

Some additional skills and experience that might benefit a candidate in this role (these are not requirements, and no one is expected to have all of them):

  • Experience designing and implementing nonviolent direct action tactics: civil disobedience, peaceful demonstrations, media stunts, or other methods of change-making that build pressure and dramatize a conflict by operating outside of regular, institutionalized, change-making procedures.
  • Organizing experience as a part of a campaign focused on a corporate target
  • Experience with spiritually-grounded
