UPPER SCHOOL PART-TIME CERAMICS TEACHER

St. Catherine's School is an Episcopal day school in Richmond, Virginia, founded in 1890 enrolling over 900 girls age 3 through grade 12.Located on a 16-acre campus in the western part of the city, St. Catherine's core values include pursuing academic excellence, developing character, nurturing spiritual growth, celebrating individuals, and building community.

POSITION OVERVIEW

St. Catherine's seeks a part-time Upper School Ceramics Teacher to teach two courses of Ceramics classes in the fall semester and two to three classes in the spring semester. An ability to teach a course in foundational art instruction in place of one of the Ceramics courses when needed is preferred.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create a classroom community based on the School's core values.
  • Teach appropriate skills-based curriculum in Ceramics and Art Foundation (if needed) based on the School’s established curriculum.
  • Work collaboratively with and align with colleagues teaching same-level courses.
  • Find joy in working with students and the wider School community both in teaching and taking part in the broader life of the School.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Holds MFA with specialization in related area or BFA with at least three years of experience teaching ceramics and/or sculpture.
  • Has expertise in the proper loading, unloading, and operations of kilns.
  • Understands and can effectively convey current ceramic techniques including coiled pottery, pinch pots, slab building and the potter's wheel, low and high firing methods, and the applications of various glazes and underglazes.
  • Has the ability to teach an Art Foundation class, if needed.
  • Demonstrates experience with secondary school students.
  • Demonstrates strong classroom management skills.
  • Has experience in executing student art shows that are held in conjunction with the Chair of the Visual Arts Department and other faculty members.
  • Will attend Art Department meetings and other faculty meetings as designated.
  • Will participate in the broader life of the school such as attending Chapel.
  • Demonstrates exceptional interpersonal and communication skills in working with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators, both oral and written.
  • Has facility with and strong implementation of educational technologies.
  • Will uphold the high standards of the School’s established program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to manipulate, handle and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out; and smell. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Ability to become CPR and First Aid Certified

TRAVEL

Occasional overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required for special events.
