Job Description

The Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) is a global coalition of more than 150 organizations dedicated to advancing the forest, land, and resource rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, Afro-descendant Peoples, and in particular the women within these groups. RRI’s members capitalize on each other’s strengths, expertise, and geographic reach to achieve solutions more effectively and efficiently. RRI leverages the power of its global coalition to amplify the voices of local peoples and proactively engage governments, multilateral institutions, and private sector actors to adopt institutional and market reforms that support the realization of rights.

RRI is coordinated by the Rights and Resources Group (RRG), a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC.

Background

To amplify our coalition members’ existing campaigning and advocacy for land and resource rights and the leadership of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant Peoples , RRG is seeking a consultant to serve as a Campaigns Support Specialist, as outlined in the scope of work below.

Purpose and Scope

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, the Campaigns Support Specialist will support campaigns generated by RRI’s coalition member organizations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Consultant Activities

The consultant will be responsible for the support of the activities and deliverables as indicated below. Please note that the final activities and associated deliverables may shift depending on the needs and capacity of RRI’s Communications team.

1. Campaigns and Outreach

Guide Indigenous and community rightsholders’ organizations on how to take their campaigns from local to global audiences by tying them to global issues and platforms.

  • Lead coalition outreach and campaign selection process based on a set criterion, ensuring clear internal communication and coordination.
  • Develop a theory of change and conduct a stakeholder analysis of how international support can solve and/or support a resolution to the issue.
  • Research the background of the issue at stake and involved parties and assess the risks to coalition members from campaigning at a global level.
  • For selected campaigns, help guide the strategy and methodologies for global campaigning, including identifying effective mediums, target audiences, KPIs and metrics, and dissemination strategies in close collaboration with community advocates.
  • Along with RRI’s communications team, help develop campaign-specific content targeting global audiences on social media and other mediums. This may include campaign guides and creative language and visual assets.
  • Provide technical advice on effective communications, campaigning, and outreach to community advocates.
  • Analyze social media and web performance statistics where applicable and provide recommendations on how to improve outreach.
  • Develop tactics to reach targets and decision makers in consultation with leaders of rightsholders’ organizations. RRI advisers and specialists depending on the sector involved (for example, the private sector, international law, human rights, regional and international bodies).

2. Knowledge Building

Help build Indigenous and community rightsholders’ organizations’ campaigning and outreach capacity to help them become their own effective advocates.

  • Support effective dissemination and use of RRI’s knowledge products and data tools by the community organizations leading the selected campaigns. This includes organizing translation of technical analyses into plain language factsheets.
  • In collaboration with RRI’s Communications team and based on needs identified by community advocates, organize training workshops to build community members’ advocacy and campaigning capacity.
  • Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learned for trainees and ensure exchange of information.

Note: Advocacy and campaigning are used here as interlinked umbrella terms for all forms of influencing, which may target national civil society, government officials, private sector, and/or other changemakers in community land and resource rights reforms.

Consultant will ensure that each campaign selected for support is led by rightsholders’ organizations themselves, and help them retain ownership of the campaign’s goals, messaging, and implementation throughout its life cycle.

Consultant Deliverables:

The consultant will complete the following deliverables:

  1. Campaigning guide for each selected campaign along with background analysis, value-add of global campaigning, strategy, and proposed actions.
  2. Weekly activity updates.
  3. Mid-term progress report.
  4. A suite of campaign communi
