About the Position:
Working closely with Operations, Marketing, and Sales Teams, this role will develop and execute a packaging strategy for all Onnit products that results in consistent, cost-effective, and sustainable packaging that protects products and delights Onnit’s customers.
Duties amp; Responsibilities:
- Works with Supply Chain team to evaluate current packaging for cost reduction opportunities, makes packaging change recommendations, executes packaging project actions, and reports key process indicators to evaluate performance against goals
- Works with New Product Development team to manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs and material selections, prototype development, and performance testing
- Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable solutions
- Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging
- Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors, periodically conduct vendor reviews and quarterly business reviews
- Work with Fulfillment team and 3PLs to identify fulfillment packaging solutions that optimize cost, size, and customer experience
- Stays engaged with packaging industry to identify trends in materials and form-factors that may be used for Onnit products
- Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Participate in product introduction teams, to deliver new products to market
- Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage
- Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs
- Work with the suppliers to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, packaging engineering, or a related field is required
- Must have 5+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging, cGMP experience preferred
- Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.)
- Problem solving and decision-making skills are necessary
- Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD software is needed
- Lean Six Sigma experience preferred
- Experience leading sustainable packaging initiatives preferred
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
- Must have good communication skills, orally and in writing.
- Understanding of process improvement, quality improvement concepts is needed; CFR 21.111 certification (e.g., CQA, CQE, CQIA) is desirable.
- Should have experience in rapid prototyping.
