Corporate Counsel

Work Location: 601 First Street NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504

Position Classification: Full-Time Regular


About This Opportunity

Rockford Construction is looking to add another Corporate Counsel to its internal Legal department! As a member of Rockford’s Legal team, you will be responsible for handling real estate, construction and corporate matters for the ‘One Rockford’ platform, which includes the construction company, development company, and brokerage and property management firm. This position supports the Grand Rapids, MI, Detroit, MI and Estero, FL office locations. As a Corporate Counsel, you will also oversee outside counsel on insurance claims, dispute resolution and other specialized business matters as they arise. This position reports directly to the Chief Counsel.

Requirements

Competency Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from ABA accredited law school.
  • Experienced in performing every step of a commercial real estate transaction, including the sale, purchase, lease or and development, which further includes due diligence and financing documentation.
  • Experienced in drafting construction contracts with owners and developers and subcontracts with trade contractors.
  • Knowledge of the construction lien process.
  • Experienced in drafting corporate documents for real estate and construction related entities.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members at all levels within the Legal department, including paralegals and administrators, and the overall One Rockford organization.
  • Ability to supervise outside legal counsel.
  • Must possess the ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple demanding tasks with overlapping deadlines.
  • Must have strong working knowledge of MS office, including skills in Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Must possess superior oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Licensed Michigan attorney (or in the process of being licensed).
  • Preferred Real Estate or Construction Lawyer having five or more years of experience.
  • Helpful to have some experience with insurance, bonds, corporate transactions and/or dispute resolution.

Type of Environment

The work environment for this position is a mix of a typical office environment and visits to construction project sites. When in the office, the physical demands require the ability to sit for long periods of time. Intermittent movement will be necessary to perform requirements of the position such as accessing centrally located office equipment.
