Job Description

About Detroit Labs

Detroit Labs was founded in 2011 and has built some of the most popular apps for iPhone and Android. We’re always taking on new projects in mobile, web, and opportunities in new technologies. Our mission is to be a people first company; a diverse and inclusive workplace; and a place not afraid to try new things. Our passion for people and teams extends to our Apprenticeship and OnSite programs, through which we educate and help guide the careers of software developers entering the field. Detroit Labs has over 100 employees, and offices in Detroit and Ann Arbor.

Senior UI/UX Designer at Detroit Labs

Our project teams are small, collaborative, and diverse. As a senior designer on one of these teams, you are essential to ensure the work we provide meets the needs and expectations of both users and the business. You'll lead the design of apps as they progress through early ideation, the stages of experience and visual design, and on through development. You'll be the team member that ensures every deliverable we ship supports our belief in design as a means for driving our client's success.

Average Day of a Senior UI/UX Designer

You'll have some interesting challenges and projects. You'll be able to create solutions that scale utilizing multiple tools to communicate your ideas, such as journey maps, user flows, task analysis, competitive audits, storyboards, wireframes, prototypes, mockups, pattern systems, and design specifications.

On an average day, you'll collaborate with engineers to assess the feasibility of ideas, implement or evolve your designs to spec and achieve a great product. You will prototype ideas to test their viability, present your ideas to partners, and manage and integrate that feedback and design the finer details of interactions and experiences. You will solve and communicate problems in the simplest fashion, then quickly turn around high-fidelity solutions. You may also be engaged in the active mentoring of a more junior designer, conducting a discovery workshop, or even participating in one of our design sprints. Our senior designers work with their teams to establish projects and scope.

Expectations at 30, 60, 90 days

In the first month you will invest time in getting to know your team and project. You will meet the design team and get to know our design toolset. You will have the chance to meet the client and learn about their design expectations.

In the second month you will have the opportunity to lead design discussions with the internal team and clients. With your growing understanding of the project you will be meaningfully participating in planning meetings for upcoming work ensuring that design is fully incorporated in the estimations.

In the third month you will have many opportunities to introduce the design team to tools and methodologies you’ve found successful in the past. You will be encouraged to share your knowledge with team members outside of design during Hack Day Demos. You will likely be forming more impactful relationships with more junior designers that may evolve into a mentorship.
