Role

This position reports to the Vice President, Finance and will lead a small team of dedicated finance professionals in scaling our Finance operations to support Tenaya’s growth from a start-up to a public company. The Corporate Controller will be accountable for building a robust financial operation on the path to public company readiness, including optimizing the close process, strengthening our internal controls, and managing key relationships with external accounting and audit service providers.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and experienced hands-on leader who is focused and also nimble balancing strategic goals with day-to-day operations. You are motivated by a dynamic, fast-paced environment and by working in partnership with other community-minded team members. You will leverage your experience in audit and public company controllership together with your critical thinking skills, relationship building, and excellent communication skills to build a world-class finance organization for a growing, special company focused on heart patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership and oversight of our accounting operations, financial systems, and monthly close process; and ensure management reports and financial statements are prepared timely and in accordance with GAAP

Develop new, and improve existing, financial policies, procedures and controls that will support our growth and increasing complexity, including strengthening our internal control environment; you will implement a future SOX program compliant with relevant 404 requirements

Lead, mentor and grow a highly effective team of finance professionals who practice Tenaya Values, contribute to the Community and are highly respected by the rest of the organization

Stay abreast of key technical accounting pronouncements, analyze risks and benefits, and manage the adoption and timing; you will be our accounting thought leader

Be accountable for the annual financial audit and periodic quarterly reviews

Review draft contracts and agreements and, as the key finance liaison, provide insightful feedback on terms and language that may impact taxes, accounting treatment, and other financial and business areas

Lead the upgrade of our financial systems from Quick Books to a more robust and scalable ERP platform; responsible for the integration with other financial systems and the foresight to think ahead of our future needs in developing the internal architecture

Manage the future external reporting process and build the related business processes to ensure successful and timely SEC filings; includes coordination with key executives, HR and Legal in developing the 10Q, 10K and other required documents

Responsible for transitioning our stock system to a more robust public company platform and managing our external stock admin service provider

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Management required, advanced degree preferred.
  • CPA with Big 4 audit experience; knowledgeable of PCAOB standards and current accounting pronouncements
  • Minimum 15+ years of relevant finance and accounting experience in the biotech industry.
  • Experience leading a private biotech company on the path to public company readiness is highly preferred. Experience in companies transitioning to clinical development and establishing internal manufacturing experience a plus.
  • Solid foundation in SEC rules and regulations and SOX compliance
  • A track record of being hands-on and nimble, implementing process improvements and other initiatives for a company going through various growth phases
  • Proven ability to develop and foster strong relationships up, down and acros
