Burke’s is seeking a dynamic educator to teach Upper School PE who can bring to life the mission of the school while working with students to further develop their motor skills and ability to care for their bodies and minds through movement. The ideal candidate enjoys working collaboratively as part of a team, thinks creatively about curriculum and possibilities for innovation, possesses a deep knowledge of child and adolescent development, and enjoys working with middle school aged children. In addition to teaching PE, responsibilities include advising a group of students to support social-emotional learning and strong learning habits.
Requirements
Job Responsibilities include:
- Teaching Upper School PE (Grades 5-8) amp; Advisory; this includes:
- Reporting on student progress three times per year using checklist/narrative report cards
- Preparing advisees for and supporting them in two student-led parent conferences per year
- Accompanying advisees on outdoor education trips, both day and overnight
- Communication:
- Effective communication with colleagues in support of a collegial and collaborative professional community
- Timely and supportive communication with students, parents, and caregivers to foster a strong partnership with families
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with Lower School and Upper School PE teams as well as a grade level advising team
- Attend and participate in weekly faculty meetings
- Contribute to curriculum development and revision
- Supervisory duties as needed
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent
- Experience teaching and demonstrated knowledge of child and adolescent physical development
- Demonstrated confidence in:
- differentiation of instruction
- cultural competency
- providing opportunities for learning through play
- innovative use of technology in instruction
- Understanding by Design approach to curriculum design (preferred)
- Commitment to:
- equitable and anti-racist teaching practices
- modeling lifelong learning professional growth by engaging with professional development opportunities
- Understanding of, and appreciation for:
- the social-emotional development of adolescent girls, especially as it relates to health, confidence, and athletics
