Job Description

Trala is a tech-powered online music school. Our mission is to make world-class music education accessible to every single person on Earth.

Right now, music education is so expensive that the joy of music is available only to the rich and urban. Imagine instead a world where all 4 billion people who will pick up an instrument in the next 30 years could get a world-class education. Imagine how much more music and joy there would be in the world. That is the future we’re obsessed with creating.

Our first product, Trala: Learn Violin, is a mobile application through which anyone can learn how to play violin. We do this using movie-quality tutorial videos featuring diverse violinists, signal processing that listens to students play their real violins and gives instant feedback on every mistake, a curriculum that prioritizes accessibility and diversity, and private amp; group lessons that build off the curriculum in the app.

Over the last 3 years, we have organically grown Trala to 250,000 downloads, students in 120+ countries, and support from some of the most famous musicians in the world. Our students are ages 7 to 70 and live in rural Montana, Lebanon, tiny Pacific islands, Hong Kong, and our hometown of Chicago.

Requirements

Your mission will be to support our Curriculum team in making Trala's video content beautiful, inspiring, and educational. As a teaching artist, you will work in a home recording studio that Trala will assist you in setting up. Working virtually with our production designer, head of curriculum, and video technician, you will record educational video tutorials according to the Trala Method for violin students. Final content will be published in the Trala app for students to engage with worldwide, and your name and bio will be added to our growing list of esteemed teachers.

At the onset, this position will be part-time based on the availability of the Trala production team.

Soon thereafter, we will expect our teaching artist to align with our team in the overall instructional vision and production quality standards. This will allow the artist to shoot independently according to their own schedule, and not interrupt their gigs and other musical endeavors.

Requirements:

  1. 4+ years' experience teaching beginner and intermediate violin students.
  2. Experience creating and being in video content, with a strong emphasis on tutorial content.
  3. Having audio / video production equipment is a bonus but not required.
  4. Experience self-recording instructional content to a virtual audience are a large plus.
  5. Active in the violin community, passionate about music education accessibility, and empathetic to the student journey.
  6. Access to a recording space (min 8’x6’) where basic lightning, backdrop, and AV equipment could be set up for the duration of the project, free of immutable noise such as traffic, HVAC, or living sound-makers.
  7. A strong on-camera presence with an energy and tone appropriate for welcoming, encouraging and educating beginner music students.
  8. Clear and organized public speaking presence.
  9. Ability to follow detailed, and sometimes technical, instruction from a remote director, and align on the vision of the final product.
  10. Action-oriented. Moves with purpose, urgency, and adventure.
  11. Access to high-quality lightning and recording equipment is a plus, but not required.
  12. Hands-on. Willing and eager to learn new skills to help out the team. Doesn’t view any task as below or above them.
  13. Creative. Able to come up with truly new ideas and be self-directed.
  14. Accountable. High standards for team productivity.
  15. Excellent organization and communication skills. Likes details. If you’ve read this whole thing, you might be a fit.
