Job Description

The Staff Electrical Engineer is responsible for the overall engineering, design, and delivery of complex electrical systems. In this position you will be part of a team that focuses on delivering IoT solutions to customers on various industrial and consumer projects. You will be a recognized expert in your discipline and have the capability to understand and integrate other engineering disciplines activities as a fair arbiter of potential design solutions across engineering domains. As with all engineers, there is accountability and expectations to deliver high quality designs from concept through production.

Significant effort will be required to coordinate and manage the activities of multi-disciplinary engineers and technicians towards a collective goal, tracking with project management tools, creating schedules, and mentoring junior engineers.

This position reports to the Director of Engineering Operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with clients to gather electrical design requirements.
  • Develop project milestones road map and project scope description.
  • Create component specifications, test plans, and other technical design documents.
  • Create ECAD schematics that meet product requirements.
  • Create and document trade studies to select the best possible options and prevent rehashing of decisions.
  • Engineer products, sub-assemblies, and parts to satisfy product requirements.
  • Guide design decisions with a system level mindset, with a focus on the integrated product.
  • Rapidly iterate designs, as needed, to arrive and deliver a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).
  • Work with production coordination on the creation of prototypes and field test articles.
  • Prepare and facilitate product design reviews and incorporate feedback into designs as permitted given product requirements and project schedules.
  • Conduct DFMEA analysis and effectively document and mitigate failure modes.
  • Identify and communicate patentable technology during the creation of new products.
  • Participate in sourcing process and interface with supply chain team and suppliers as required.
  • Estimate material/fabrication costs for new products and custom products execute new product development to cost targets and communicate cost vs. performance conflicts early in the design.
  • Exhibit engineering knowledge and techniques through successfully launched product development projects.
  • Review and evaluate field-tested units and customer feedback on field tested units to improve product design.
  • Accompany new products on field tests, operate the equipment, train others, and document feedback.
  • Assist manufacturing in the building, testing, and training associated with new products.
  • Good hands-on engineering skills soldering (e.g. DIP, SOIC, TQFP, 0402 packages, lead free), system and printed circuit board troubleshooting, lab instrumentation (e.g. National Instruments, LabVIEW, digital instrumentation).
  • Create Engineering Change Orders (ECO) when board packages are revised and work with Production Coordination for recording and implementing any reworks required outside the ECO process.

Team Leadership:

  • Assist the Director of Engineering in developing and executing department priorities.
  • Be receptive to diverse team ideas and foster a psychologically safe environment for the delivery of projects.
  • Rapidly but methodically down-select competing ideas to keep forward momentum.
  • Effectively create and gather consensus on technical approaches from stakeholders.
  • Balance feature addition against time to market requirements.
  • Lead by example and mentor new engineers in good design practices, Breadware procedures, and communication skills.
  • Review product design and analyses of team members and provide technical advice and direction.
  • Help to manage and develop facilities and infrastructure required for success.

Company Participation:

  • Effectively document and communicate design decisions to company stakeholders.
  • Document procedures and transfer to technical writing for technical manual creation.
  • Collaborate with Marketing for the creation of any needed material.
  • Develop and write test procedures that can reliably validate functionality and train QC technicians on execution.
  • Work with Purchasing, Outside Vendors, and Internal Assembly Technicians as prototype parts are fabricated to ensure designs are manufacturable and easily inspected.
  • Participate in pre-sales call with prospective clients as needed.
  • Assist Sales and/or tech leads in price estimation and budgetary exercises.
