Job Description

The RN House Supervisor performs key responsibilities and meets position requirements as outlined in the hospital’s RN job description.

Outside of regular business hours, the RN House Supervisor (HC) is also responsible for overseeing admissions and discharges, unit operations, fiscal and staff management, and managing patient care services. The HC will support and direct nursing staff assignments and facilitate communication with other disciplines, departments and community resources.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Admissions and Discharges

  • Work closely with Assessment and Referrals (Aamp;R) to provide oversight of admissions and discharges. This includes timely assessments and inpatient admissions.
  • Oversee unit operations including (but not limited to) timely completion and review of multidisciplinary treatment plans (MDTP); checking logs (refrigerator, emergency cart log, POC testing, legal tracking logs); accuracy of patient Kardex; and PYXIS discrepancy resolution.
  • Audit all seclusion or manual hold interventions on assigned shift.
  • Monitor inventory of office, medical, and patient care supplies. Request replenishment of supplies as needed.
  • Alert the Administrator on Call (AOC) when urgent or extreme events occur. Examples include, but are not limited to, AWOL patients, 911 or urgent ambulance transfers, patient injuries, staff injuries, and incidents involving law enforcement.
  • Gather and compile data for daily shift and routine reporting. Prepare shift report and review with oncoming Nurse Manager or House Supervisor and forward copy to CNO. Routine reports include Shift Summary, Bed Control, and Incident Reports.
  • Prepare and investigate Incident Reports (IR) in an accurate and timely fashion; follow up with staff education to prevent reoccurring incidents.
  • Maintain a clutter-free working environment.
  • Responsible for assisting with educational and staff development requirements for the Nursing Department.
  • Directly supervise nursing staff on assigned shift. Provide staff feedback on performance. Contribute to formal introductory and annual employee evaluations to Nurse Manager and to CNO.
  • Support CNO, NM, and RNs to provide a high quality orientation and ongoing education for clinical staff. Continually educate staff on key issues relating to hospital policies and procedures and health care regulations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely shift-to-shift reports.
  • Monitor clinical issues for high acuity patients or patients with unusual problems.
  • Coordinate offsite tests, emergency room visits, admission and discharges, lab processes, work orders and audits.
  • Address and resolve patient and family complaints. Proactively work with NM when a complaint becomes a potential grievance and alert the hospital’s Internal Patient Advocate.

Unit Operations

Fiscal and Staff Management

  • Oversee staff assignments to prevent unnecessary overtime and ensure appropriate staffing levels based on census and acuity assessments. Manage appropriate staffing levels in conjunction with Staffing Coordinator. Report any staffing concerns to Nurse Manager (NM) or AOC. Document approved overtime on employee time adjustment forms.

Requirements

Education/Licensure

  • Current RN License
  • Current CPR certification
  • CPI (or equivalent as approved by CNO) obtained within 90 days of hire
  • Knowledge and experience of psychiatric diagnosis and associated risks, medications, biological systems, nursing process, treatment planning, and leadership. New RN graduates may meet these requirements if they have completed a psychiatric rotation as part of nursing school or have psychiatric experience in another role.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

The RN House Supervisor will pass initial and annual competency evaluations including (but not limited to): suicide prevention, safe use of restraints, de-escalation interventions, medication knowledge, code blue/emergency interventions, infection prevention, and appropriate use of seclusion and manual holds. The House Supervisor will need to complete additional competencies related to managing patient care, staffing systems, and internal reporting requirements.

The House Supervisor has a high level of knowledge of Policies, Procedures, Unit Operations, Hospital Operations, Health Care Regulations and educates staff on key issues. The HC will demonstrate that, in addition to being competent, they are skilled in applying knowledge and competency in their daily nursing practice.
