SUMMARY

Generation Bio seeks an energetic, versatile, and highly motivated Associate Scientist to join our Retinal Biology team, within our Preclinical Research group. The successful candidate will perform assays to support the development of our research platform as well as to help understand disease biology for our retinal disease programs. For this lab-based position, the successful candidate will utilize multiple cell and molecular biology techniques while working with a cross functional team. Familiarity with or a willingness to learn rodent eye dissections is a plus. Research will focus on planning and executing endpoint assays for in vitro studies to advance both the platform and processing ocular tissues to assess distribution and gene expression for our growing pipeline of development candidates.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design experiments, analyze data, and interpret results
  • Conduct in vitro experiments including cell culture maintenance, transfection, cell model characterization, and end point assays
  • Harvest retinal tissue from rodent eyes and perform assays to assess transgene delivery, expression, and biological effects
  • Optimize and execute assays to assess distribution, gene expression (e.g. qPCR, ELISA, western blot), and biological effects (e.g. function, localization, enzyme activity, signaling pathway activation/inhibition) in tissue samples and cultured cells
  • Summarize studies in written reports and oral presentations

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with 0-2+ years of related experience
  • Excellent lab technique and the ability to work independently to design experiments and analyze, interpret, and present data
  • Experience extracting DNA/RNA/protein from tissue and/or cells and subsequent evaluation of gene expression by PCR, ELISA, western blot, etc.
  • Experience with cell culture manipulation techniques (e.g., transfections, cell-based assays)
  • Executes standard experiments with level of rigor necessary to establish credibility of results
  • Performs well-defined lab experiments with general supervision and willingly seeks advice, can identify problems, and analyze and interpret results
  • Familiarity and/or an interest in learning about retinal biology/ophthalmic disease is a plus
  • Experience with (or willingness to learn) dissection methods to isolate retinal tissue from rodent eyes
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to allow effective division of time between lab work, data analysis, and documents results clearly
  • Meets challenging goals in a timely manner, with managerial support
  • Ability to work in matrixed environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior experience with gene therapy a plus
