Director of Structure Hardware

Full Time - Exempt

As we continue to grow and create more products, we are looking to hire an experienced mechanical leader to help shape our state-of-the-art robotic inventory management system. Alert Innovation offers a competitive salary, generous benefits, and an equity stake in our growing company.

The Director of Structure Hardware is broadly responsible for leading the development of new and continuous improvement programs related to our automation system’s mechanical structure. The candidate is responsible for helping shape and interpreting high-level customer and product stakeholder requirements, working with the team to build a cohesive vision of required functionality and approach to implementation, and then support execution by directing high level efforts, removing barriers, evaluating completed work increments, and sharing/communicating progress. The leader ensures that we develop designs that meet product performance and cost requirements within budget and on schedule.

What Will You Do?

  • Provide high level technical and people leadership to project teams
  • Develop and maintain hardware technical vision leveraging input from customers, vendors, and other technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Work with development team members and a dedicated project manager to define accurate project schedules for complex mechanical engineering projects.
  • Investigate new technologies
  • Drive delivery of aggressive goals by managing project schedule, product features and performance, cost, and resources effectively through a phase-gate process
  • Confirm that implementation-specific approaches satisfy all safety and stakeholder needs.
  • Ensure team is appropriately resourced to deliver on product goals.
  • Anticipate and communicate project risks, thought leader for mitigations.
  • Effectively communicate status with stakeholders regarding deliverables, timelines, and budget.
  • Develop strong working relationships with adjacent development teams to improve efficiency and collaboration.
  • Provide mentorship to improve team effort estimation and early risk identification/mitigation skills.
  • Ensure that comprehensive deliverables are completed per Alert’s product development processes and provide feedback to process owners to support continuous improvement.


What are We looking for?

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in complex mechanical product management, including technical team leadership, scheduling, resource planning, and budgeting.
  • Experience building alignment and excitement around projects.
  • Skilled in solid modeling, including drawing preparation. (CREO preferred)
  • Exposure to the requirements amp; volume production of structures interacting with automated material handling, control, and/or warehouse management systems is a big plus.
  • Dedicated servant leader, able to provide clear priorities and delegate effectively.
  • Ability to work successfully in a collaborative team environment and constructively influence team decisions.
  • Possession of a comprehensive suite of tools applicable to common project challenges.
  • 5+ years of individual contributor mechanical design experience, ideally in large system structural design (bolted or riveted frames).
  • Familiarity with product phase-gate process.
  • High energy, drive, commitment, self-initiative, and perseverance are required with a demonstrated track record of personal technical accomplishments.
  • Familiarity with both Waterfall and Agile methodologies preferred.
  • B.S. or M.S. degree, preferably in mechanical engineering or a related field (or the equivalent in training and experience).
