Job Description

Are you keen to work somewhere that’s stimulating, friendly, with countless opportunities for growth and plenty of autonomy? This could be it!

We are looking for the Lead Counsel (US) at INSHUR, pre-pandemic based in New York City and currently remote but working the EST timezone. You’ll be working on a next gen commercial auto insurance platform expanding in the USA, UK and the EU.

Supported by (and reporting to) the VP of Legal amp; Commercial, you'll be joining a friendly team of 3 who believe in providing the business with best-in-class support when it comes to all things legal and compliance.

What you'll do

As our Lead Counsel in the US you will own all legal items regionally (US), providing overall support with all things legal in the broadest possible sense. You will be providing legal support including on product regulatory filings and compliance (including market conduct, regulatory licensing, consumer complaints and privacy), coverage questions and any ad-hoc advice to the claims function and IP, marketing and advertising legal advice generally. You will handle corporate amp; commercial contracts and partnerships (including managing relationships with external counsel as needed), advise on agency and distribution law matters, be the point-of-contact for any dispute resolution issues and act as co-sec legal support for our US operating entity.

We don’t have a checklist of skills - our hiring process is much more around aptitude and passion so don’t worry if you’ve not used a particular tool or checked off all the skills and experience listed below.

That said, below is a guideline of skills for you to take a look at that we think would make you successful in this role.

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Are a qualified attorney with around 8 years post-qualification experience of working in a hands-on, client- facing commercial environment with the majority of the time working in the Pamp;C insurance business or providing legal advice to that business
  • Have a track record of working with US insurance regulators to resolve a variety of regulatory matters, including product form and rate questions.
  • Are licensed to practice law in at least one US state and in good standing.
  • Can demonstrate self-starter skills, including a career path exemplified by taking on diverse and challenging tasks and roles during your career
  • Have a true ability to work effectively in teams of various sizes
  • Aren’t phased by managing a variety of sometimes unrelated tasks and projects and working with business partners to meet their timelines and expectations
  • Are a continual learner - you want to know all there is about the industry, customers, other teams, and marketing best practices

Your colleagues say you are:

  • A leader who can motivate teams
  • A succinct and engaging writer, able to translate technical concepts into easy-to-understand language
  • Analytical, naturally curious and a born collaborator

What we offer

We provide a friendly and stimulating remote environment for everyone to grow, learn and thrive and we encourage a flexible way of working to adapt to personal circumstances and individual and business needs.

Our budget for this role is $160,000-$185,000 and we will take into account your previous experience and location of work when agreeing on the final offer.

We offer all our employees stock options and we've built a benefits package that invests in our employees’ long-term personal and professional growth and wellbeing. Here’s a sample of what this includes:

  • 30 days of holiday annually in addition to 8 federal holidays and statutory sick leave
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance
  • Basic Life, short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • 401K match
  • 13 weeks full pay parental leave regardless of your gender
  • Flexibility to choose your own place of work (East Coast USA only) and flexible working hours
  • Annual training allowance (no questions asked) and regular learning opportunities
  • Commuter benefits
  • Monthly flexible wellbeing allowance to help you remain healthy and productive
  • And much more

It goes without saying that we provide everyone with a laptop, monitor, top of the range kit and any software you need.

Where possible, we will cross-train and/or focus on what interests you, whether it’s to be involved in various aspects of the business including building broader commercial relationships with INSHURs channel and capacity partners or developing and/or maintaining insurance industry trade association and other professional relationships and stay current on new or proposed laws and anticipate trends that may impact the business.
