Job Description

This position is assigned to the ELVIS contract supporting the NASA Launch Service Program. The System Administrator maintains the UNIX/Linux ensuring proper applications and availability to users as required. The System Administrator provides efficient timely support that meets and often exceeds customer expectations helping to reduce the cost of space missions.

General Summary:

  • Responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining Linux and Windows servers, including Web servers, in support of Launch Services Program processing requirements.
  • Perform software installations and upgrades to Unix/Linux operating systems and layered software packages and maintain them in accordance with established IS policies, procedures and service level agreements.
  • Monitor and tunes the system to achieve optimum level of performance.
  • Ensure Linux data integrity by evaluating, implementing and managing appropriate software and hardware solutions.
  • Ensure data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations.
  • Support media management through internal methods and procedures or through offsite storage and retrieval services.
  • Conduct routine hardware and software audits of Unix/Linux for compliance with established standards, policies, configuration guidelines and procedures.
  • Maintain a comprehensive hardware and software configuration database/library of all supporting documentation. Develop and promote standard operating procedures.
  • Install, configure and maintain backups of Windows and Mac workstation and laptop hard drives.
  • Install software upgrades and patches on workstations and servers.
  • Initiate and track purchase and maintenance requests.
  • Track hardware and software inventory and system configurations.
  • Monitor and review system and network security. Identify vulnerabilities and take action to reduce risk.
  • Provide hardware and software troubleshooting. Respond to help desk calls in a timely and effective manner.
  • Hands on system administration in maintaining and supporting computers and networks using one or more UNIX/Linux operating systems. Perform UNIX/Linux systems administration, configuration and tuning, load balancing, performance improvement, and shell scripting as required.

Leadership

  • Communicate ideas and solutions effectively to management, team members and customers both orally and in writing.
  • Work effectively with other ELVIS members to ascertain needs, resolve differences and ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Provide timely project status report to Business Area Manager and team members. Actively participate in staff meetings. Present new ideas, offer solutions, raise issues and determine ways to assist team members.
  • Inform management of project issues immediately and present plausible solutions.
  • Meet project schedules and organize own time effectively. Notify management immediately when schedule conflict arises.
  • Able to complete break/fix tasks with minimal direction, following standard operating procedures and sound business practices.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for the job, pride in the organization and a willingness to perform tasks as assigned.

Client Relations

  • Respond to help desk issues in a timely manner by communicating effectively to understand the problem.
  • Act as primary liaison between the IT services and the end user.
  • Identify opportunities, nurture relationships and identify client needs.

Minimum Education/Specialized Certification Requirements:

  • US Citizenship
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Engineering, Computer Science or 10 years related technical field experience
