Job Description

Johnson Electric (JE) is excited to announce that we are now recruiting for an Actuator Design Software Engineer with Electronics experience for our Vandalia, OH location. This role is to drive mechatronic design and analysis, to develop deep application expertise in the solenoid systems space, and to deliver new technology through the use of sound engineering and physics principles heavily based in analytical simulation tools including ANSYS Maxwell/Fluent.

Responsibilities:

  • Architectural (high-level) design of mechatronic systems for a multitude of application spaces including automotive, locking systems, material handling (automation), and medical devices
  • Electronics and firmware ownership including conceptual design to detailed design to production utilizing sophisticated design tools (including Altium) and industry standard documentation and testing practices
  • Involved indirectly in design activities in the mechanical design and electromagnetics design disciplines
  • Develops design of experiment to validate models and ensure designs will meet the customer performance requirements
  • Creates test plans for products or components with a solid understanding of reliability and failure mechanisms
  • Collaboration across the disciplines of mechanical engineering, electromagnetics engineering, process engineering, as well as production and commercial business teams. Work with these teams for design reviews, meeting cost metrics, and brainstorming around customer pain points
  • Acts as a mentor for junior engineers in all disciplines including reviewing and approving work.
  • Involved in customer interface to uncover both explicit and implicit needs and leads the activity to convert those needs into technology-based solutions
  • Develops a deep understanding of the industry and applies it to build forward thinking technologies that customers are desperate for but may not have even realized it

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (EE, CSE, or similar) and 10+ years applicable industry experience or advanced engineering (EE or CSE) degree (PhD preferred) and 6+ years applicable industry experience.
  • Advanced experience with electronics and firmware design for electromechanical products.
  • Advanced knowledge of power electronics and digital electronics application and theory and a good knowledge of mechanical, electromagnetic, and manufacturing engineering principles.
  • Basic level of proficiency in SolidWorks and mechanical design principles including an ability to read mechanical drawings and create basic levels of mechanical documentation.
  • Experience in engaging with customers and developing technology tightly coupled to customer needs and pain points.
  • Skilled in building working relationships with all levels of personnel both inside and outside the organization.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills specifically in technical report writing and communicating complex technical topics to all levels.
  • Advanced Altium experience with clean sheet designs having taken products from conception to production.
