Job Description

Primary writer and editor for the organization. Responsible for the implementation of the organization’s communications strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities, both external and internal. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Independence Care System.


Essential Functions:Internal Communications
  1. Create internal communications strategy, manage implementation of internal communication strategy and create content for internal communications vehicle, The Huddle.
  2. Write and edit articles regarding internal developments for the organization.
  3. Monitor success of communications through data, surveys and relationships with staff

External Communications

  1. Responsible for writing and editing marketing materials that will enhance the organization’s brand, image and position in the marketplace and for the general public, and facilitate internal and external communications.
  2. Write and edit ICS marketing publications and web site.
  3. Cultivate and maintain contacts in various media outlets. Pitch stories for publication.
  4. Writes and distributes press releases to introduce new products and services and other news worthy developments.
  5. Help create marketing campaigns to advertise new products and services.
  6. Conduct relevant market research, monitor trends and adjusts strategy accordingly.

Fundraising and Advocacy

  1. Identify funding opportunities; write grants and reports as needed, while supporting digital and social media fundraising campaigns.
  2. Follow policy issues for people with disabilities, write white papers, letters, reports, and lead campaigns as needed.
  3. Provide support to the Civics League for Disability Rights, the ICS member advocacy group.

Administrative Duties

  1. Keep informed of developments in the fields of health care, policy, marketing, communications and public relations, not-for-profit management and governance.
  2. Manage a team of 2-3 full-time communications professionals.
  3. Respond to the needs of members and the organization, even if those needs do not coincide with the details of this job description.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in non-profits, government, marketing, communications or public relations with demonstrated success
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, public relations or like field required
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, communications and public relations activities
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Supportive and effective manager of people, interested in developing skills in staff
  • Comfortable providing feedback to senior level staff in a helpful and productive way

Additional Qualifications

  • Healthcare policy and advocacy experience and interest in advocating for an underserved population. Experience working with or on behalf of people with physical disabilities is a plus
  • People with a lived experience with disability are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Fluency in a second language desirable
