Job Description
We’re a small startup using IoT to increase the efficiency of the operating room. We use RFID to measure surgical instrument use, capturing a novel data stream that describes how surgery is being performed. By forecasting patterns in resource utilization, we help the hospital eliminate waste while ensuring the clinical team has exactly what they need when they need it.
We’re a team of clinicians, hardware engineers, and entrepreneurs driven by the technology vertical enabled by a unique data stream. We are currently deploying our first product for our first customer. We install multiple sensors in the OR that capture RFID data and relay it to an on-prem server. Our data is combined with information that describes the surgery, sanitized, and moved to a secure bucket for analysis.
In your very first week, you will meet with our customer. You’ll help troubleshoot issues that arise during the installation process and continue building the scripts that connect their IT systems to our containerized software.
As you learn our approach, you will help us improve what we’ve built. You will be responsible for adapting and creating software that helps us expand to our next customers as we change paradigms from an on-server installation to a fully edge-based system.
Your main focus will be in Distributed Systems and DevOps, ensuring reliable operation of a distributed IoT system. You will begin introducing automation for the data analytics. This work will serve as a foundation on which customer-facing user dashboards will be built, and on which machine learning models will be trained and deployed. You will have the opportunity to become involved in either or both of these parallel efforts.
This role is varied and will evolve quickly. Components of our first product include:
- RFID client and server Written primarily in Go, with a few bits of C (to interface with the RFID board’s API) and SQL (to persist signals to a PostgreSQL DB). GRPC is used for client-server communication.
- AWS used for testing the stack before deployment to hospitals and to manage surgical instrument tagging metadata. Terraform manages the infrastructure, which is centered around a Kubernetes cluster deployed to EC2.
- Data analysis Python code used to analyze data (including machine learning) and generate reports.
- Web interface a React app that interfaces with our backend server to enable viewing, searching and modifying instrument tag metadata.
Requirements
You are comfortable as both a high-level architect and a low-level coder. As an individual software engineer, you’ll need to learn, design, implement, and iterate quickly.
You are excited by the challenge of building solutions that operate within the diverse and complex healthcare IT ecosystem, working with hospital IT/engineering staff along the way to do so.
You are self-motivated, with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and powerful initiative.
You are a leader, driven towards taking on responsibility with the ability to make important decisions and support them in lively debate.
You understand when you need help and present ideas for how we can assist either by changing the problem, or by bringing in external advisors or consultants.

We currently work out of two locations (Colorado Springs amp; Durham, NC). We would be thrilled to have you join us at one of these locations but are also open to remote work.
If remote, we may provide a stipend for a shared workspace (we believe that in-person interactions at the workplace simply cannot be replicated virtually).
