Job Description

Advocacy Intern
Location: Remote, but intern should be based in the D.C. area and be able to occasionally visit the office under safe conditions.
Duration: June-August 2021
Type: Part-time, 20-25 hours per week
Paid: D.C. minimum wage ($15 per hour)
Reports to: Head of Congressional Affairs

The HALO Trust (USA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization specializing in the removal of landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW), with projects in 25+ countries and territories employing almost 9,000 people. HALO’s Washington, DC office works with government partners, international agencies, foundations, and private donors to increase awareness of the impact of landmines and ERW on post-conflict communities and to raise funds to support HALO’s teams working overseas.

The DC office is seeking an enthusiastic intern for the summer interested in US politics and international affairs to support HALO’s Congressional engagement. These activities will support direct advocacy to Congressional offices, assist with expansion of partnerships, and help develop HALO’s grassroots advocacy program.

Key responsibilitiesinclude:

  • Drafting newsletters and emails to Congress and grassroots advocates
  • Helping to plan and execute events (events virtual, until safe to convene in person)
  • Performing light research and producing briefs or handouts on international or mine action issues, Congressional issues, etc.
  • Updating and designing aesthetically pleasing fact sheets in Canva or Adobe InDesign
  • Compiling photos for use in advocacy materials
  • Supporting grassroots advocacy recruitment, engagement, and retention through outreach, online updates, building online advocacy campaigns, and advocate stewardship
  • Inputting and managing data in Quorum and other organizational databases
  • Creating social media content as needed
  • Tracking hearings, legislation, and Congressional staff changes using Quorum, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Applicants should be highly organized, flexible, self-motivated, and detail-oriented with a strong interest in the non-profit and international development/humanitarian sector. We are looking for the following skills:

  • Incoming or current graduate student with an academic focus in political science, public affairs, international affairs, or similar
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Proficient in social media and Microsoft suite (including Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Prior experience in a Congressional office or conducting Congressional advocacy is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with Quorum, Canva, or Adobe In-Design a plus, but not required
