Job Description

This role is responsible for the fabrication of mechanical parts and fixtures and will build needed prototype models, ensuring varying degrees of accuracy and complexity are constructed based on client strategic needs and internal team specifications.

Supports small to large projects within the model making discipline, including the ability to construct with wood, foam and plastic. Operates FDM 3D printers and finishes 3D printed parts. Attends and participates in internal creative / ideation sessions.

Essential Functions

  • Aptitude to operate the fabrication equipment and tools, including, laser cutters and RF welders within the Prototype Shop to produce the desired quality and accuracy of prototype parts being requested.
  • Ability to perform formative processes such as equipment cleaning or material preparation, in addition to the proper techniques for fabricating prototype parts.
  • Ability to fabricate prototype parts from raw stock materials, while working primarily from 3D CAD files, but also from engineering drawings and sketches, and with supplemental verbal and written instructions from the internal client team.
  • Ability to assemble prototypes and mock-ups to simulate new product appearance.
  • Works to assist with the construction of tools, jigs, and fixtures for assembly and manufacturing needs to support product development prototyping needs, while focusing on providing proper fit and function of interacting parts.
  • Ability to interpret engineering 3D and 2D CAD data, specifications, sketches, and drawings.
  • Ability to work with paint, including color matching, mixing and applying quality paint on finishes.
  • Ability and experience to work with automotive style surface repair and paint preparation.
  • Proficiency to construct soft goods through vacuum forming, injection molding and casting. Additional ability to fabricate with metal (shearing, bending and forming).
  • Works collaboratively with other prototype associates as well as industrial designers, engineers, and outside resources to solve complex problems.
  • Assists in all aspects of the prototyping process, including the troubleshooting and modifying of elements to resolve any design issues. As well as researching new technique and materials for application.
  • Assist in the ordering of materials and supplies needed during the prototyping process.
  • Ability to safely operate the equipment in the Prototype Shop with working knowledge on how to maintain a safe work environment.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 years of prototype or model making experience.
  • Associate degree in Industrial Design, Model Making, Sculpting, Fine Arts, or apprenticeships in a related field preferred.
  • Proven skills in the creation of high quality models and design evaluators for new product development.
  • Packaging and crating experience.
  • Expertise in surface and detail part finishing and painting.
  • Experience in operating FDM 3D printer.
