Job Description

Smashing Boxes is looking for a recent college graduate or anyone eager to work hard to quickly learn all aspects of the company’s business operations, to steadily take on more and more significant responsibilities, and over time to provide input and support to company leadership to drive continuing growth in existing and new business opportunities. The position requires a candidate who is willing to immediately execute the daily details required in running a business and eager to grow over time into more complex and strategic responsibilities--the right candidate would be on a track to the role of Chief of Staff to the CEO.


Our ideal candidate is clever and quick-witted, is eager to work hard with incredible attention to detail, and understands how the work impacts all areas of the business (the big picture). The ideal candidate can solve problems with minimal direction as easily as following existing processes, speaks and writes clearly and precisely, and is someone who other team members enjoy working with.



Areas of Responsibility:

Business Strategy and Operations

Assist with special projects and venture related tasks at the direction of the CEO and company leadership



Finance and Accounting

With quickly increasing responsibility, support company leadership in executing both routine day-to-day financial matters and complex financial analyses and projections

  • Initial accountabilities will include invoicing clients and coordinating payment receipt; tracking bills and paying vendors; executing payroll to ensure accurate and timely employee payments; managing business banking accounts and relationships; and tracking all financial transactions within company’s accounting software.
  • Initial supporting and future growth accountabilities include budgeting, forecasting, and modeling profitability, cash flow, and strategic financial deliverables; and working with company’s brokers to update liability insurance coverage in line with company’s new business.


Real Estate / Facilities

Initially support and, in short time, serve as point person on all real estate / facilities matters

  • Initial accountabilities will include facilitating property manager’s responses to sublet-tenants’ needs; serving as interlocutor between property manager and company leadership, especially anticipating and highlighting any high-need items; monitoring the financial and code-compliance impact of any new subleases, renovations, or repairs initiated/managed by property manager


Human Resources

Initially support and, in short time, organize and lead all human resources/people operations functions

  • Initial accountabilities will include recruiting candidates for open positions and coordinating the hiring process; onboarding new hires to ensure they know the company culture, policies, and processes, and have access to the technology that they need for them to hit the ground running; working with company’s brokers to coordinate employees’ enrollment in and termination of medical and other benefits; fostering and facilitating the culture and communication needed among company’s employees to retain highly-talented staff.
  • Initial supporting and future growth accountabilities include building a network to facilitate recruitment of talented employees; ongoing review and design of company’s compensation, benefits, training, and performance review programs; building and maintaining company culture (especially as meetings and collaboration have happened increasingly online)

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree with an outstanding academic record


  • Extremely adept with technology

Proficient in common productivity software (documents, spreadsheets, presentations); savvy at quickly becoming a power user when learning new software; familiarity with common accounting/finance and HR systems is preferred but not required

  • Exceptional analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills

Facile with financial/numeric data, experience using data to substantiate a recommendation or conclusion

  • Strategic Thinking and Problem Solving

Demonstrated ability to consider an issue, identify and anticipate needs and perspectives, propose solutions, elevate when necessary, and incorporate feedback effectively. Excellent research and presentation skills.

  • Capable Project Management and Organization

Highly organized with proven ability to work cross-functionally, including ability to track, manage and execute work streams toward completion

  • Effective Communication

Strong interpersonal skills
