Public Outreach Specialist Rindge Dam Removal Position Summary:

The Public Outreach Specialist position is a part-time position in California Trout’s South Coast regional office in San Diego. California Trout (CalTrout) is an environmental nonprofit organization, based in San Francisco and with seven regional offices state-wide, whose mission is to protect and restore wild trout, steelhead, salmon and their waters throughout California. The Public Outreach Specialist will report to CalTrout’s South Coast Regional Director and will be responsible for leading outreach for Rindge Dam removal in Malibu State Park.

Job Description: The Public Outreach Specialist will give presentations, develop outreach material, hold virtual and in-person meetings in Malibu and regionally to educate and engage the public in the benefits of removal of obsolete Rindge Dam, and solidify political and philanthropic support. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in governmental projects, issues surrounding dams and their removal, education and outreach. This is a contract position for 10 months starting 5/1/2021.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Public Outreach: Lead information and listening meetings with City of Malibu, local residents and others to build stakeholder support

• Dam Removal Education: Generate fact sheets, informational summaries on dam removal status; track governmental status of Congressional approval

• Project planning: Develop scenarios for project team roles and responsibilities for the dam removal process

• Develop a white paper on lessons learned from other dam removal projects that are part of CalTrout’s Dams Out Campaign

Requirements

Education and Experience:

• A B.S. degree is preferred in environmental science or policy, or a related discipline with at least three years of experience related to social, ecological, economic and political issues of dam construction and removal; a Master’s degree is advantageous with emphasis on policy.

• Demonstrated skills with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and MS Project; GIS skills are a bonus. Skills and Knowledge • Strong project management administrative skills; • Professionalism and excellent communication skills;

• Strong writing and analytical skills;

• Interdisciplinary team skills, including ability to work with multi-regional staff

• Perform general computer skills and quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications;

• Self-starter with strong sense of ownership and involvement

Benefits

• Salary is $48/hr for 750 hrs, starting 6/15/2021 for 10 months
