Job Summary: Personal Lines Underwriting Trainees will complete a structured training program that is designed to promote professional development and advancement within our company. The training will incorporate a variety to training mediums, including hands-on training, industry specific coursework, mentoring, and position-shadowing to gain a strong foundation of industry knowledge. Completion of the program positions the candidate to excel in the Underwriting role and be prepared for future roles within Concord Group Insurance.

The training program covers a period of 12 18 months in the Personal Lines Underwriting department. Upon completion, the trainee will have an appropriate level of job and industry knowledge to assume full Underwriter responsibilities while continuing to develop technical knowledge and professional acumen.

Essential Functions

  • Exposure to all aspects of the Personal Lines business unit to include training, acclimation, and work contribution within the Underwriting Associate and Underwriter work units
  • Development of a working knowledge of the Insurance industry, coverages, underwriting practices, and regulatory requirements
  • Evaluation of a broad spectrum of individual risk characteristics typically used in the underwriting selection and pricing process; Characteristics contemplated include physical property evaluations, driving records, financial ratings, loss experience, and other factors recognized as indicators of quality
  • Development of productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders and business partners
  • Interaction, both written and verbally, with Company personnel, agency representatives, and others to collect risk information, explain underwriting policies and procedures, and effectively negotiate coverage terms and conditions
  • Critical decision-making to include acceptance, modification, or declination of risks
  • Industry and job-related educational studies and coursework

Other Functions

  • Other duties as assigned
  • Occasional travel to visit agents and attend company or industry sponsored events

Education

  • Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent industry exposure/experience
  • Holding or pursuing industry licenses, designations, and certificates is a plus

Physical Demands

This is both a sedentary and active role and includes but is not limited to the following physical demands:

  • Remain in a stationary position for a constant period of time
  • Occasionally move about, ascend or descend a ladder, and/or traverse a loss site during the course of an investigation
  • Occasionally move or transport up to 55 pounds
  • Occasionally observe, inspect, and assess objects at close or long distances
  • Frequently communicate with individuals inside and outside the Company to exchange accurate information
  • Frequently operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
  • Occasionally move about inside the office to collaborate with co-workers, attend meetings, and access file cabinets, and office machinery
