Job Description

Position: Controller

Reports To: CFO

Mission:

Owns and manages the day-to-day financial transactions of the business to ensure complete, accurate and timely data. This job will involve creating strong policies and procedures and improving internal controls in all key business areas. Success will entail transitioning Finance from a small, transaction-driven department to a highly effective, process-driven team enabling all future business decisions to be truly data driven.

Outcomes:

  • Supervises Finance team through one-on-one training and mentoring, providing timely feedback and support.
  • Continually suggests improvements to increase the efficiency and timeliness with which routine financial tasks are performed to allow the company to scale all systems for future growth, including the following processes:
  • Takes a strong ownership position in the company’s Inventory System by:
  • Takes a strong ownership position in the company’s Advertising Expenses by:
  • Performs Cash Treasury functions as follows:
  • Prepares monthly Balance Sheet, Pamp;L and Statement of Cashflows for external reporting in accordance with GAAP.
  • Records, tracks and reports borrowing activity (properly segregating short-term portion of long-term debt, managing amortization schedules, etc.).
  • Performs data analyst function providing management with KPI's, analysis, metrics, constantly improving and implementing metrics that align with growth and business model.
  • Suggests amp; implements software solutions, including the planned implementation of Netsuite. Performs admin function on all Finance software and technology.
  • Manages new-store set up (business licensing, sales tax, payroll withholding, insurance, etc.). Ensures that new store and/or entity costs are appropriately capitalized and amortized in accordance with GAAP.
  • Purchasing/Ordering process (including new store openings);
  • Accounts Payable;
  • Sales amp; Credit Card Receipts;
  • Accounts Receivable;
  • Gift Cards amp; Store Credits (tax compliant).
  • Constantly engaging with the Operations team and Store Managers;
  • Ensuring a GAAP-based inventory system (average costing, etc.);
  • Ensuring an accurate and reliable physical inventory count and book-to-physical reconciliation. This will require visiting stores and observing their counting procedures on week-ends and/or after hours.
  • Working closely with The Martin Agency to track and understand the advertising budget;
  • Ensuring appropriate monthly reconciliations of actual ad spend to prepaid amounts;
  • Implementing and reporting ad spend metrics to the management team.
  • Monitors all bank accounts on a daily basis;
  • Manages company cash position creating payment cycles that maximize the cash flow cycle, while ensuring all invoices are paid in accordance with terms;
  • Updates weekly Cash Dashboard and presents to management team;
  • Performs monthly bank and credit card reconciliations.

  • Proactively planning for growth, for efficiencies; constantly bringing ideas forward;
  • Multi-tasks without losing focus, efficiency or data integrity can prioritize to-do’s based upon sound judgment.

Requirements

Required:

  • Accounting Degree, auditing experience preferred;
  • Quickbooks or other accounting software experience;
  • Strong Excel experience (pivot tables);
  • Inventory Systems experience (costing, counting, etc.);
  • Experience directing the work of others;
  • Retail experience a plus.
