Job Description

We’re seeking an experienced, proactive, and collaborative life sciences transactional attorney to join Alector as Corporate Law Director.
In this role, you will help Alector advance its research and product pipeline by providing transactional legal support to teams across a wide variety of company functions, including research, technical operations, medical affairs, business development, and Gamp;A departments. Working closely and directly with these teams, you will advise decision makers to enable resolution on legal issues and to ensure that Alector’s agreements meet its strategic and business objectives while mitigating risk. You will negotiate a variety of agreements, as well as resolve escalations from and provide leadership and mentorship to more junior legal team members. Your responsibilities will also include working with others on the legal team to develop and improve templates and play-books and to develop, implement, and train on contracting process improvements to reflect and enable the company’s growth and evolution. You will be an integral member of Alector’s small and experienced legal team, where initiative and collaboration are highly valued, and will have the possibility to be involved in additional company priorities and initiatives.
This is an opportunity to contribute broadly across the company, applying and further developing your transactional and other legal skills and expertise to enable Alector to advance its research programs and bring its pipeline of immuno-neurology and immuno-oncology development products to patients.The responsibilities for this role will include:
  • Advising business partners on legal issues, identifying risks, and together with decision makers, developing pragmatic solutions
  • Contracting in support of multiple functions, including drafting and negotiating agreements to progress critical Alector programs, including leading contracting for technical operations/CMC-related functions
  • Managing and mentoring a contract specialist (to be hired) on more routine matters
  • Collaborating within legal and cross-functionally to develop templates and playbooks to manage risk and increase efficiency and consistency
  • Improving and implementing processes to enable efficient contracting
  • As needed, working with and efficiently and effectively managing outside counsel
  • Working on additional projects as needed to support other Alector priorities and functions
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
  • A JD degree from an accredited law school with membership in good standing with a state bar, with the ability to practice law in-house in California
  • A minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in a law firm or corporate in-house legal department
  • Significant experience drafting and negotiating a broad range of agreements in support of biotech company functions
  • Ability to partner and establish relationships cross-functionally
  • Sound judgment, to identify and develop practical solutions that meet the business objectives
  • Organizational skills, with the flexibility to manage changing priorities, multiple projects, and timelines
  • Initiative, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, adept at communicating complex issues across varied audiences
  • An entrepreneurial spirit that will enable you to thrive at a small company that has high ambitions
