The Opportunity
In this role, you will be responsible for developing new products and making significant improvements to existing products in the areas of performance, consistency, features, reliability, and cost. Your projects will run the gamut from early concept generation and evaluation through design transfer under design controls and will often require experience in mechanical design and analysis, product reliability, and design for manufacturability.
To be successful in this role, you must be adept at working independently and in collaboration, possess a strong drive to learn and understand, and be able to quickly build new domain-specific expertise. You should have ready, well-honed intuition that you can support and refine with rigorous analysis and data. You must be pragmatic and able to effectively balance short-term imperatives with long-term goals in a fast-paced startup environment.
Responsibilities
- Understand and formulate the problem to be solved in a clear and concise manner.
- Develop solutions in the form of new products, product components, and production processes using existing and emerging technologies, following medical device Design Control requirements when applicable.
- Design prototypes and build feasibility models for proof of concept testing.
- Design and conduct experiments to establish robust product performance that meets
- Maintain detailed and accurate technical records in a laboratory notebook per company policies.
- Prepare project-related documentation.
- Prepare and manage test protocols and reports.
- Generate invention disclosures to support patent applications for new technology.
- Partner with suppliers.
- Partner closely with manufacturing, process, and quality engineers to incorporate design for manufacturability.
- Support manufacturing of new and existing products.
- Stay current with technology, practices, and general engineering knowledge through seminars, literature, and peer groups.
Requirements
- BS in Engineering (Mechanical or Materials Engineering preferred) or a related scientific field or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in biotech, pharmaceutical or medical device industry
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Curious and interested in learning new things
- Effective working independently or as part of a team
- Collaborative, flexible, and driven
- Working knowledge of scientific and engineering principles
- Excellent computer skills, MS Office proficiency
- Proficiency in SolidWorks
Prefer
- Master’s or PhD
- Are familiar with GMPs and how they relate to device design and manufacture
- Have experience and expertise in machining (CNC mill, lathe)
- Have experience with GDamp;T and technical drawings
- Have notable successes to point to in product development, including design, implementation, verification, validation, and manufacturing
