Associate General Counsel, Payments

Wyre is on a mission to bring crypto to the masses.

To accomplish this mission, we’ve built a simple set of tools that allow developers to materialize their projects. Our fiat-to-crypto Checkout gateway is now being used by hundreds of applications to offer the easiest way to convert payments into crypto. Our flexible White-Label Payment APIs, enable developers to build e-wallets, merchant processing services, and money transfer platforms from the ground up.

We focus on compliance, licensing, liquidity, and payment processing services so our partners can do what they do best, creating amazing tools on the blockchain.

We’re looking for a highly motivated, entrepreneurial and experienced payments lawyer to join our legal team as Associate General Counsel. This position will report to our General Counsel.

This lawyer will focus their practice on the application of global payments regulations and best practices to novel crypto offerings developed by Wyre and will support the Revenue team on onboarding new API partners. This role requires high EQ, the ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics and - a sense of humor.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Act as primary legal advisor for the business developments and products teams, managing payments products globally.
  • Provide legal advice on payments industry compliance standards and global regulations impacting payments processing and money services/money transmitter businesses.
  • Support the launch of compliant payment products in light of changing regulatory and/or industry rules.
  • Negotiate and draft payment partner agreements.
  • Lead consensus building and drive coordination with cross functional teams, including compliance, risk, product and engineering teams.


Requirements

What We Look For In You

  • Currently licensed in a U.S. state. JD or equivalent with 8 to 10+ years of legal experience with 6+ years of in-house experience in the payments industry.
  • Experience with product or regulatory counseling related to payments and payment processing, including money transmitter laws, Electronic Fund Transfer Act/Reg E, FinCen, CFPB regulations (UDAAP), data protection/privacy laws and regulations, data security and other legal frameworks.
  • Experience providing legal advice on payments industry compliance standards, including Automated Clearinghouse (ACH) operating rules, card payment network operating rules (including best practices for card-not-present transactions) and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).
  • Experience working on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, delivering practical advice under pressure and with ambiguity.
  • Experience taking on projects involving different subject matters, and working with cross-functional organizations.
  • You have substantial expertise working with product teams in launching global user- oriented products.
  • Experience providing legal thought leadership in novel areas. Comfortable challenging the status quo and preconceived notions of what is possible as well as working in areas where regulation is still evolving.
  • Proven problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills.
