APPRENTICE WATER PLAN OPERATOR JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position involves completing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks associated with the operation, maintenance and repair of the water plant. Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of tasks in operating and maintaining the public water system on an assigned shift. An employee of this class controls and maintains treatment machines and equipment involved in purifying and clarifying water for human consumption. Work involves contact with regulatory officials and the public in resolving water problems. Employees of this class are required to work rotating or non-standard shifts. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of a plant foreman who reviews work through conferences and reports for results obtained.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Records data such as residual content of chemicals and water turbidity; corresponds and communicates with city and state officials and the general public.

Controls treatment machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and industrial use; operates, adjusts and determines specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, polyphosphate and fluoride, into water to disinfect, deodorize and clarify water; prepares reports for water treatment.

Repairs and maintains machines and equipment using hand tools and power tools and carries out the maintenance protection program.

Monitors water and draws samples for analysis by the sate laboratory to assure water meets state and federal requirements; reviews lab analysis results and confers with proper officials when corrective actions are required; ensures city complies with state and federal regulations governing public water supplies and investigates complaints of poor water quality.

Performs process control testing by taking samples to evaluate the water quality being produced.

Performs dispatch functions for Gas, Electric and Water utilities. Dispatch functions are from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, as well as 24 hours on holidays and weekends. Dispatch functions include answering telephones involving emergency trouble and service calls, dispatching the Night Serviceman to the affected area, and if necessary, call personnel from the gas, electric and/or water departments at home and have them report to work. Will be subject to random drug testing as required by the Office of Pipeline Safety.

Makes production decisions on treating water to meet the demand of city water use.

Maintains work records; pump and well maintenance records and water quality sampling records.

Performs work with the Water Distribution crews as necessary.

Performs related work as required and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must pass Water Plant Class I certification exam within six (6) months of employment in the position.

A Water Plant Operator must certify to the level of the water plant, based on the state’s certification requirements.

Must be able to work rotating or non-standard shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Must possess good mechanical and electrical troubleshooting ability.

Must be able to lift 50 100 pounds.

Must hold a valid South Dakota Driver’s license.

Considerable knowledge of general maintenance, tools, equipment and practices required.

Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions; to read, interpret and work from blueprints, schematics and maintenance manuals required.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others required.

Graduation from high school or GED required.

Supplemental vocational courses in the mechanical trades; considerable experience in water maintenance work or any equivalent combination of experience and training preferred.

Considerable knowledge of water maintenance activities preferred.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to the proper execution of assignments preferred.

Salary range $24.92 to $27.41 per hour, depending on experience.
