Job Description

As a mission-driven school, Burke’s is seeking a part-time English teacher for grade 7 or 8 who can educate, encourage, and empower girls by developing their skills in reading, writing, and literary analysis. Identity, identity formation, and exploring different perspectives and lived experiences are themes that run throughout the Upper School English curriculum. With an emphasis on project-based learning and a commitment to anti-racist education, students should be able to connect their learning to the world around them, communicate their ideas through speaking and writing, and be empowered to see themselves as agents of positive change. Expository and creative writing, vocabulary development, and grammar instruction are also part of the curriculum.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching a section of 7th English
    • Formally assessing and reporting on student progress three times per year using checklist/narrative report cards
    • Providing extra-help sessions during and after the school day, as needed
    • Planning and supervising field trips relevant to curriculum
  • Communication:
    • Effective communication with colleagues in support of a collegial and collaborative professional community
    • Timely and supportive communication with students, parents, and caregivers to foster a strong partnership with families
  • Collaboration:
    • Participate in Upper School English team meetings in addition to attending weekly faculty meetings, all-school meetings, and professional development days
    • Contribute to curriculum development and revision
  • Supervisory duties as applicable

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent, preferably in a humanities-related field
  • Experience teaching, preferably at middle-school level

    • Understanding by Design approach to curriculum design (preferred)

Benefits

Burke’s offers competitive compensation with a salary range of $66,028 - $144,571 based on years of experience plus advanced degree stipends. Both prorated for 0.375 FTE. Comprehensive benefits are provided. More information about the school can be found on the website at www.burkes.org.
