Job Description
Encodia has an immediate opening for a Scientist Enzyme Engineering who will help us to revolutionize protein sequencing using our unique, reverse-translation technology. This position will drive in the lab efforts for an exciting new project that will greatly improve enzyme discovery programs. The successful applicant will have deep expertise using microbial and in vitro systems to build assays to monitor and evolve enzyme activities. A demonstrated ability to leverage computational approaches and collaborate across functional teams is essential. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to grow and influence in a dynamic company focused on cutting edge single-molecule protein sequencing technology.
Requirements
What You Bring to this Role
- Ph.D. in a biological discipline focused on enzyme engineering, protein biochemistry, directed evolution, and protein design. Post-doctoral work may serve as experience.
- Directed evolution research experience is desired. Previous enzyme engineering and kinetic characterization experience is desired.
- Deep expertise with protein engineering, enzyme evolution and molecular biology technologies. Proficiency in enzymology/kinetics and in vitro biochemistry.
- A creative thinker with a strong track record of modifying enzyme behavior through developing new enzyme assays in microbial and in vitro recombinant systems.
- Well versed in building variant libraries with directed and random approaches, and screening those libraries for new and modified catalytic activities.
- Practical experience implementing automation approaches to improve assay throughput and reliability is beneficial.
- Proactive communicator with demonstrated success using oral and written strategies to communicate project status and direction.
- Leads by example, using positive strategies to help establish a professional environment of trust, respect, and collaboration.
- Critical thinking and independence, ability to troubleshoot, solve difficult problems, and develop process improvements.
- Experienced, hands-on scientist with demonstrated excellence in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments.
- A strong collaborator capable of driving success in a highly matrixed work environment.
Your Responsibilities
- Be part of a talented team of scientists who use cutting edge protein and enzyme engineering technologies to identify new enzyme variants with novel catalytic properties.
- Generate enzyme libraries using various directed evolution methods, aiming to scale up enzyme screening efforts.
- Design and execute well-controlled in vitro enzyme assays to demonstrate technological feasibility and improvements for enzyme characterization.
- Integrate with the computational scientists to predict new target opportunities and lead the lab efforts.
- Maintain relationships with external collaborators for technology growth opportunities.
- Collaborating internally, train junior team members in new technique.

Compensation: $94,000-$167,500/year. While compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
